Atlas Obscura VR

Atlas Obscura VR is a high-fidelity, self-paced virtual travel experience based on the popular Atlas Obscura book and website. The experience features detailed accounts of over 50 destinations from the beloved Atlas Obscura book, along with three fully interactive episodes totaling over 45 minutes of adventure.

Three Main Interactive Episodes

The app features three fully immersive locations:

  • Temples of Damanhur (Italy): A subterranean marvel in the Italian Alps created by a federation of spiritual communities
  • Salina Turda Salt Mine (Romania): One of the world’s most stunning underground formations and a testament to human ingenuity
  • Winchester Mystery House (USA): The enigmatic, sprawling mansion in San Jose, California that was once home to Sarah Winchester, widow of firearms magnate William Wirt Winchester

Technical Details

The project uses high poly count photogrammetry integrated with 8K 360° stereoscopic video and high levels of interactivity. The experience allows users to choose their own paths and discover hidden secrets at each location.

Release History

Originally released in 2017 for Oculus Go and Samsung Gear VR, the app was remastered for modern VR devices in 2024. It’s currently available on Meta Quest, Steam, Google Play, and as of late 2025, Samsung’s Galaxy XR headset with exclusive eye-tracking features.
