Chess Club MR

The greatest strategy game of all time — now in Mixed Reality. Place a chess board on your desk, your kitchen table, or the floor of your classroom, and play against a friend or the AI in your actual physical space. Four breathtaking VR environments, hand tracking, voice commands, motion-captured avatars, ELO-ranked online play, and animated fantasy pieces. The #1 chess game on both Meta and Pico stores, from Odders Lab — and just $9.99.

🔲 Mixed Reality — Chess in Your Real Room

The MR update (July 2024) lets you place the chessboard in your actual physical space using Quest 3 passthrough — on your desk, on the floor, on a table in the classroom. The board and pieces appear in your real room, and you move pieces by hand or controller. It's a genuinely extraordinary demonstration of what Mixed Reality can do. Note: MR mode uses hand tracking in passthrough — it does not physically scan your real chess set, so you play with virtual pieces placed over your real-world surface.

About the Game

What is Chess Club MR?

Chess Club is the leading chess game across both Meta Quest and Pico stores — originally launched in 2021 by Spanish developer Odders Lab, and continuously updated ever since. It began as a VR chess experience with stunning environments and then, on World Chess Day (July 20, 2024), received a free Mixed Reality update that placed the game in your actual physical surroundings through Quest 3 passthrough. At the same time, the price was permanently reduced from $14.99 to $9.99 — making it one of the best value propositions in all of VR gaming.

The result is a polished, feature-complete chess experience that gives you everything you'd want: AI opponents at multiple skill levels, ELO-tracked online ranked play, casual online games, local friend matches, hand tracking, voice commands, animated fantasy pieces, motion-captured avatars, move history, time controls, and a rematch system. It's not a novelty — it's a genuinely excellent chess implementation that happens to be in one of the most impressive VR environments available.

Why chess in VR is different: Sitting across a physical chessboard from an opponent, you are constrained by the flat 2D perspective of the table. In VR, you can stand up and walk around the board, peer at it from above, lean in to examine a specific cluster of pieces, or view your opponent's position from their side of the board entirely. The three-dimensional spatial freedom VR provides is not a gimmick in chess — it genuinely changes how you think about the game and read positions.

The four VR environments — a Grand Palace, Stonehenge at dusk, an Escher-inspired Dream space with impossible geometry, and a tranquil Master Garden — are each beautifully realised and far more atmospheric than any physical chess club setting. MR mode adds a fifth "environment": whatever room you're actually in, with the board placed wherever you choose.

🔲
Mixed Reality — Board in Your Real Room
Switch to MR at any point — including in the main menu — and the chessboard appears in your actual physical space via Quest 3 passthrough. Place it on a desk, on the floor, on a table. Play your full game against AI or online opponents without leaving your room. You can toggle between VR and MR freely at any time during a session. MR is available across all game modes: vs AI, ranked, casual online, and friend matches.
🤖
AI Opponents — Multiple Difficulty Levels
Practice against the AI at adjustable difficulty levels — from absolute beginner to strong club player. The AI provides a meaningful challenge at every stage of chess development, making Chess Club useful whether a student is learning the moves for the first time or preparing for competitive play. No internet connection required for AI games, making it reliable for school use even on restricted networks.
🏆
ELO-Ranked Online Play
Play casual or ranked games against chess enthusiasts worldwide, with a full ELO rating system that tracks your progress and matches you to appropriate opponents. A rematch system makes it easy to play multiple games against the same opponent. The Discord community runs regular tournaments — a genuine competitive ecosystem for students who want to take their chess seriously.
🤲
Hand Tracking — Reach Out and Move Pieces
Full hand tracking support means you can play chess with no controllers — simply reach out, pinch a piece, and place it. Legal moves are highlighted in blue; illegal placements turn red until corrected. This is one of the most intuitive demonstrations of hand tracking available on any headset — the natural action of picking up a chess piece translates perfectly. Controllers are also fully supported for those who prefer them.
🗣️
Voice Commands & Motion-Captured Avatars
Voice commands allow hands-free control of game functions. Customisable avatars with motion capture and lip-sync make online opponents feel present across the board — you see them react in real time as you make moves. The social experience of sitting opposite an avatar that moves naturally and responds to your play dramatically increases the sense of shared presence compared to flat digital chess platforms.
🏰
4 Stunning VR Environments
Grand Palace, Stonehenge, Escher Dream, and Master Garden — each fully realised and far more atmospheric than any physical chess setting. Animated fantasy pieces add personality to each environment. Move history lets you review the game after it ends. Time controls — classical, rapid, blitz — suit different playing styles and time available in school sessions.

Chess Club & Enrichment
The most obvious fit — Chess Club MR is the ideal platform for a school chess club. Multiple simultaneous headsets mean several games at once. ELO tracking gives students measurable progression. AI practice between club sessions builds skill continuously.
🧮
Maths & Logic
Chess is one of the most studied domains in cognitive science for its demands on logical reasoning, pattern recognition, forward planning and spatial thinking. These skills transfer directly to mathematical problem-solving. Research consistently links regular chess play with improved maths attainment.
💻
Computing & AI
Chess AI is one of the foundational topics in Computing history — from Shannon's 1950 paper to Deep Blue to AlphaZero. Playing against the AI in Chess Club can anchor discussions of search algorithms, minimax trees, and the history of artificial intelligence in a concrete, tangible way.

Chess Club MR is the most broadly age-appropriate VR app in any school's library — suitable from age 7 upwards with no concerns whatsoever. No violence, no content issues, no motion sickness (you are seated at a board). The MR mode is also one of the best demonstrations of Mixed Reality technology available for students who have never experienced passthrough AR — placing a game board in the real room never fails to produce a reaction.
