Cell Explorer VR
Step inside a giant animal cell, explore its organelles up close and learn what each one does, then test yourself with a ten question quiz. Cell Explorer VR runs free in a web browser on a computer, or in full VR on a Meta Quest 3 through the headset's browser.
Cell Explorer VR is a free cell biology activity hosted here on The XR School. It is built with WebXR, the web standard for virtual reality, so it runs straight from a web page with no app to install and no account to create. On a laptop or desktop you move with the WASD or arrow keys and look around with the mouse. On a Meta Quest 3 you open the page in the headset's Meta Browser and tap Enter in VR to explore at full scale.
Inside, you stand within a giant animal cell with the nucleus ahead of you. Hover over or approach each structure to learn its name and function. The nine organelles include the nucleus and nucleolus, the cell membrane, mitochondria, ribosomes, the endoplasmic reticulum, the Golgi apparatus, lysosomes, vacuoles and centrioles. When you are ready, a ten question quiz tests what you have learned, with questions such as what the Golgi apparatus does and which organelle forms the spindle during cell division.
