Walkabout Mini Golf
Walkabout Mini Golf
The most acclaimed VR game that isn't a blockbuster — and one of the best multiplayer social experiences on any platform, VR or otherwise. Forty handcrafted 18-hole courses spanning tropical islands, deep space stations, ancient ruins, fictional movie worlds and a toy-built seaside town. Up to 8 players in a private room. Physics so convincing reviewers call it real mini golf. Guest Pass so friends join your DLC courses for free. Built by a 35-person independent studio that has been adding new courses every six weeks for five years — with 2026 and 2027 already planned.
Walkabout Mini Golf is rated PEGI 3 — the most permissive possible rating — with zero content concerns at any age, from primary school upwards. It is included in both Meta's Quest+ and Metahorizon+ subscription libraries, so schools already subscribed can access the base game and its 14 courses at no additional cost. The Guest Pass feature means that if one player owns a DLC course, all friends in their private room can play it too — so a single DLC purchase can serve an entire group of up to 8 players.
What is Walkabout Mini Golf?
Walkabout Mini Golf is a VR mini golf game developed by Mighty Coconut, a 35-person fully independent studio led by Lucas Martell — a filmmaker and game designer who began the project as a solo endeavour in 2020 with just four courses. Five years later it has become one of the most beloved games in VR across all genres, with 40 courses, near-perfect ratings on every platform, and a development pipeline that extends into 2028.
The game's genius is its understanding of what VR uniquely offers. Courses are not simply mini golf layouts with a new skin — each is a complete world to explore, with its own theme, mechanics, ambient sound design, animated characters, hidden secrets and Easter eggs. Mighty Coconut leans so far into VR-first design that in some ways its courses are better than even the best Disney theme park ever could be — there are no queues, and each hole hides a tiny Easter egg waiting to be discovered.
Mighty Coconut is 100% player-funded and entirely independent — no investors, no publisher, no parent company. What they make from selling the game and DLC goes directly to funding further development. Their only goal is to maintain the balance of keeping staff paid and happy while continuing to provide top-quality content. The team already has all of its 2026 and 2027 courses planned and is already planning for 2028. For schools, this continuity of support is as valuable as the game itself.

Curriculum & Educational Fit
Walkabout Mini Golf's primary school value is as a universal social and enrichment experience — arguably the best in the entire VR catalogue. No other VR game simultaneously serves every age group (PEGI 3), every comfort level (teleport, smooth, fly), up to 8 players at once, and achieves near-universal critical acclaim. It is the game you reach for when you want a session that will delight everyone in the room without any caveats, content checks or motion sickness concerns.
For Maths, the geometry of every putt — reading the angle to the hole, adjusting for slope gradient, estimating the effect of power on distance — is live applied geometry. The course layouts use ramps, banked surfaces and elevation changes that make trajectory and force calculation concrete rather than abstract. For Physics, ball-surface interaction, friction, elastic collision and the effect of slope on momentum are all directly observable and manipulable with every shot. For Art & Design, Walkabout courses are masterclasses in themed world-building — the way each course uses colour, lighting, sound, scale and detail to create a complete sense of place makes them exceptional stimulus for design discussions. For Computing, the physics engine's behaviour — how the ball responds to different surfaces, angles and spin — provides a real example of physics simulation in game design. Strongly recommended as the first VR experience for any student, any age.
