Walkabout Mini Golf

The most acclaimed VR game that isn't a blockbuster — and one of the best multiplayer social experiences on any platform, VR or otherwise. Forty handcrafted 18-hole courses spanning tropical islands, deep space stations, ancient ruins, fictional movie worlds and a toy-built seaside town. Up to 8 players in a private room. Physics so convincing reviewers call it real mini golf. Guest Pass so friends join your DLC courses for free. Built by a 35-person independent studio that has been adding new courses every six weeks for five years — with 2026 and 2027 already planned.

Walkabout Mini Golf is rated PEGI 3 — the most permissive possible rating — with zero content concerns at any age, from primary school upwards. It is included in both Meta's Quest+ and Metahorizon+ subscription libraries, so schools already subscribed can access the base game and its 14 courses at no additional cost. The Guest Pass feature means that if one player owns a DLC course, all friends in their private room can play it too — so a single DLC purchase can serve an entire group of up to 8 players.

About the Game

What is Walkabout Mini Golf?

Walkabout Mini Golf is a VR mini golf game developed by Mighty Coconut, a 35-person fully independent studio led by Lucas Martell — a filmmaker and game designer who began the project as a solo endeavour in 2020 with just four courses. Five years later it has become one of the most beloved games in VR across all genres, with 40 courses, near-perfect ratings on every platform, and a development pipeline that extends into 2028.

The game's genius is its understanding of what VR uniquely offers. Courses are not simply mini golf layouts with a new skin — each is a complete world to explore, with its own theme, mechanics, ambient sound design, animated characters, hidden secrets and Easter eggs. Mighty Coconut leans so far into VR-first design that in some ways its courses are better than even the best Disney theme park ever could be — there are no queues, and each hole hides a tiny Easter egg waiting to be discovered.

What the press says: "An adorable mini-golf game that is unexpectedly convincing" — New York Times. "Brilliantly designed. Seriously, you have no idea how good VR minigolf is" — CNET. "Everyone with a Quest 2 needs to play Walkabout Mini Golf" — TechRadar. 4.9/5 on the Meta Store and 9.8/10 on Steam — it is a game that is slightly competitive yet deeply relaxing.

Mighty Coconut is 100% player-funded and entirely independent — no investors, no publisher, no parent company. What they make from selling the game and DLC goes directly to funding further development. Their only goal is to maintain the balance of keeping staff paid and happy while continuing to provide top-quality content. The team already has all of its 2026 and 2027 courses planned and is already planning for 2028. For schools, this continuity of support is as valuable as the game itself.

What's on the Green

🌍
40 Courses — Each a Complete World
Fourteen courses included in the base game ($24.99). A further 26 available as DLC at $3.99–$4.99 each — with new courses released roughly every six weeks. Walkabout Mini Golf currently has 39 courses to choose from (40 with Blokhaven, released May 2026). Locations span tropical islands, gothic castles, deep ocean ruins (Atlantis), space stations, a candy land, an old west town, a dinosaur park (Raptor Cliffs), Jim Henson's Labyrinth, the island of Myst, and most recently Blokhaven — a seaside town built by animated shipwrecked toys. Each course has a unique visual identity, hand-composed music, and mechanics that differ from every other course in the game.
🎱
Physics That Feel Like Real Mini Golf
Mighty Coconut has absolutely nailed the ball physics, creating a game that feels spectacularly like playing real mini golf. You putt with one controller, adjusting power by pulling back and releasing, reading the slope, the green surface and wind. Trick shots are not just possible but encouraged — firing a ball out of bounds doesn't ruin your hole, and the physics supports Rube Goldberg-style bank shots that reward experimentation. Hard Mode unlocks for each course, making courses significantly more demanding for players wanting a real challenge. The same ball lands in completely different positions depending on slope and power — every putt is a decision.
👥
Up to 8 Players — Private Rooms & Guest Pass
Private rooms support up to 8 players simultaneously on the same course — the largest player count of any VR golf title. Cross-play means Quest, PSVR2, Pico and Steam players can all share the same round. The Guest Pass feature is particularly valuable for schools: if the teacher or one student owns a DLC course, every player in their private room can play it for free without purchasing it themselves. A single $3.99 DLC purchase can serve eight students simultaneously. Public 1v1 quick match is also available for competitive solo play against strangers.
🔍
Hidden Balls, Foxhunts & Course Exploration
Every course contains hidden lost balls — collectible spheres scattered in out-of-the-way locations that reward careful exploration. Over 250 custom balls are hidden throughout all courses, each visually unique when used. Foxhunts are in-game treasure hunts exclusive to Hard Mode — follow cryptic clues hidden within the course to find a secret putter unique to that course. For students, these mechanics transform mini golf sessions into something more like a collaborative puzzle hunt, rewarding curiosity and observation skills rather than just putting accuracy.
🏠
Comfort, Customisation & Constant Updates
Both teleport and smooth locomotion are supported, plus the ability to fly between holes — making it one of the most motion-comfort-friendly VR experiences available. If you struggle with motion sickness, this is a great option. Avatars feature lip sync with a quadrillion+ combinations. Driving range and practice green included. The game runs at 90Hz on Quest 2/3/Pro. New courses release approximately every six weeks with new mechanics, music and secrets — Blokhaven, released May 7 2026, is Walkabout's 40th course and third new course in 2026 alone.

Walkabout Mini Golf's primary school value is as a universal social and enrichment experience — arguably the best in the entire VR catalogue. No other VR game simultaneously serves every age group (PEGI 3), every comfort level (teleport, smooth, fly), up to 8 players at once, and achieves near-universal critical acclaim. It is the game you reach for when you want a session that will delight everyone in the room without any caveats, content checks or motion sickness concerns.

For Maths, the geometry of every putt — reading the angle to the hole, adjusting for slope gradient, estimating the effect of power on distance — is live applied geometry. The course layouts use ramps, banked surfaces and elevation changes that make trajectory and force calculation concrete rather than abstract. For Physics, ball-surface interaction, friction, elastic collision and the effect of slope on momentum are all directly observable and manipulable with every shot. For Art & Design, Walkabout courses are masterclasses in themed world-building — the way each course uses colour, lighting, sound, scale and detail to create a complete sense of place makes them exceptional stimulus for design discussions. For Computing, the physics engine's behaviour — how the ball responds to different surfaces, angles and spin — provides a real example of physics simulation in game design. Strongly recommended as the first VR experience for any student, any age.

Bottom line: The gold standard for VR social gaming — and one of the best multiplayer experiences on any platform. Near-perfect ratings on every store, 40 handcrafted worlds, Guest Pass so friends share DLC for free, up to 8 players at once, zero content concerns, and a studio that has been shipping new content every six weeks for five years with no signs of stopping. If you only put one game on every Quest headset in your school, make it this one.
