Overview

Catan (originally Settlers of Catan) is one of the most significant board games of the modern era. Designed by Klaus Teuber and published in 1995, it is credited with bringing strategic European-style board gaming to mainstream audiences, selling over 40 million copies in 40 languages. Catan VR, developed by Experiment 7 in partnership with Teuber and his son Benjamin, and published by Asmodee Digital, brings that experience into virtual reality.

The game launched on Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR in 2018 before arriving on Meta Quest in February 2021. It places you on the island of Catan itself: you stand at the table, reach forward to roll physical dice, collect resource cards, place settlements and roads with your hands, and negotiate with other players through voice. The environment is rich: wheat fields sway in the breeze, a mandolin strums in the background, and clouds roll over the hex-tiled mountains. The Quest version added a new "Study" room setting, 90Hz support, updated textures, and improved network stability.

Made with Catan's Creator: Authentic AI Opponents The AI opponents in Catan VR were developed in direct collaboration with Klaus Teuber, who guided the AI personalities to reflect the tactical styles and characters established across the Catan universe. Each AI has a distinct name, avatar, and strategic personality. VRScout noted that "not only does the original board game experience translate perfectly to the VR format, but it's also enhanced by it, immersing you in the world of Catan." For teachers using Catan as a strategy and resource management tool, the AI's reliability means lessons are not dependent on online matchmaking availability.

Curriculum and Educational Value
Economics, Probability, and Negotiation Catan is one of the most educationally rich strategy games available in any format. Its core mechanics touch directly on KS3 and KS4 Maths (probability of dice outcomes; understanding that 6, 7, and 8 are most frequently rolled; optimising placement based on probability), Economics (resource scarcity, supply and demand, trade negotiation, marginal value), and PSHE/SMSC (negotiation, alliances, managing competing interests, strategic communication). Teachers have used physical Catan in classrooms for decades to teach these concepts. The VR version adds the immersive dimension of being present on the island, with the advantage of automated rule enforcement that removes teacher overhead. The randomised island layout each game ensures high replay value across sessions.

What Critics Say
VRScoutRecommended
"Not only does the original board game experience translate perfectly to the VR format, but it's also enhanced by it, immersing you in the world of Catan. Whether you're a longtime fan or simply a lover of multiplayer strategy games, Catan VR is a must-play on the Quest."
Steam user (verified)73% Positive
"If you love Catan, this is great. The island looks wonderful, the atmosphere is perfect, and being able to physically roll the dice and place settlements with your hands adds something the flatscreen version never had."

"Catan VR is available now for $14.99. It features friend invites and online matchmaking, plus an AI mode for solo play against opponents designed with guidance from Catan creator Klaus Teuber."
Strengths and Limitations
Strengths
  • Licensed adaptation of one of the world's best board games
  • Developed with Catan creator Klaus Teuber — rules and AI are authentic
  • Beautiful island environment: wheat swaying, mandolin music, rolling clouds
  • AI opponents at multiple difficulty levels — reliable for solo/classroom use
  • Online multiplayer + friend invites + cross-platform (Quest/Rift/PSVR)
  • $14.99 — accessible price for a major licensed game
  • Excellent curriculum connections: Maths, Economics, PSHE
  • Randomised island layout ensures every game is different
Considerations
  • Online matchmaking player pool may be thin (game is from 2018/2021)
  • 73% Steam positive is modest for a licensed title — some feel the VR additions are limited
  • Base Catan only — no expansions (Seafarers, Cities & Knights, etc.)
  • Platform compatibility focused on older Quest models — verify Quest 3 support
  • A full game typically takes 60-90 minutes, requiring longer sessions
Online multiplayer note: plan around AI Catan VR launched in 2018 and, while it retains a user base, the online matchmaking pool has diminished over the years. For classroom use, planning sessions around the AI opponents rather than relying on public matchmaking is strongly recommended. Invite-a-friend sessions using school headsets are a reliable alternative if multiple headsets are available. The AI difficulty range from beginner to master ensures appropriate challenge at any level.

Verdict
A faithful and atmospheric VR adaptation of one of the most educationally rich strategy games ever made. The 60-90 minute playing time, randomised island, and core mechanics of probability, resource management, and live negotiation make Catan among the strongest strategy board games for secondary classroom use in any format. The VR version adds genuine immersion — you are on the island, rolling physical dice, placing settlements with your hands. At $14.99 with solid AI and cross-platform play, it is excellent value. The modest 73% Steam rating reflects some limitations in VR implementation and thin online matchmaking rather than the quality of the game itself. Plan sessions around the AI rather than public matchmaking.
