3D Organon

3D Organon XR is a professional medical education platform that goes well beyond an anatomy atlas: all 15 body systems, microscopic models, medical imaging in 3D, ultrasound simulation, assessments and a shared virtual classroom. It is free to download and try, but most of it sits behind a subscription, which is aimed squarely at universities and medical schools.

Overview

3D Organon is developed by Medis Media and has been on Meta Quest since 17 March 2021, with versions for Steam, Pico, HTC and Lenovo headsets as well as desktop, tablet and mobile devices. Its developers describe it as the first fully featured VR software for comprehensive medical education, and it is used by more than 600 institutions, including Weill Cornell Medicine and Bond University.

A full subscription unlocks all 15 body systems, microscopic models and organ mapping, with terminology aligned to Terminologia Anatomica, the international standard for anatomical names, and definitions in 16 languages. Beyond the atlas it includes XR medical imaging, ultrasound simulation, assessments, recorded training sessions and Medverse, a multi‑user space where a tutor and students can learn together. A recent update added an AI study assistant that offers real‑time explanations.

Try Before You Subscribe The app is free to download. Guest Mode gives two hours of full access with no login, which is plenty to judge whether it suits your students. After that, a set of models and features remains free, including the skeletal and connective systems and joint animations, while everything else needs a subscription. Institutions get access through their administrator.

Why the Low Store Rating? On the Meta store 3D Organon averages 2.4 stars from 89 reviews. Its feature list is impressive, so the rating likely reflects the gap between a free download and a subscription that unlocks most content, plus the need for an internet connection and an account. Schools should judge it on a Guest Mode trial rather than on the star rating.

Strengths and Limitations
Strengths
  • Comprehensive, medical school level content
  • Imaging, ultrasound simulation and assessments
  • Multi‑user Medverse for tutor led sessions
  • Free download with a two hour full trial
  • Skeletal and connective systems free after the trial
  • Runs on many headsets and devices
  • Used by 600+ institutions
Considerations
  • Most content needs a subscription
  • Low Meta store rating (2.4 from 89)
  • Internet connection required
  • Pitched at medical students, not school pupils
  • Subscription prices are not published on the store
For Teachers: Best for Older Students Heading Into Health 3D Organon is most useful for A level Biology, BTEC and T Level Health courses, and sixth formers preparing for medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy or nursing. Use the two hour Guest Mode to try a lesson on the skeleton and joints, which stays free afterwards. For younger students, an app with a simpler school level, such as Human Anatomy VR, is usually a better fit.

Verdict
3D Organon is a serious medical education platform with features most anatomy apps cannot match, from ultrasound simulation to multi‑user teaching spaces. Its subscription model and low store rating make it a harder sell for schools, and its content is pitched at medical students. For sixth forms and colleges with students heading into health careers, the free two hour trial is well worth taking; for younger students, simpler and cheaper apps fit better.
