Overview

War Thunder is a free-to-play military vehicle MMO developed by Gaijin Entertainment that has been running since 2013. It covers air, ground, and naval combat with a library of over 3,000 vehicles spanning 11 nations and more than 60 years of military history, from WW2-era biplanes to Cold War jets, from Shermans to Challenger 2s, from destroyers to aircraft carriers. All vehicles are available through the tech tree at no cost, with premium content accelerating the grind.

VR support has been part of War Thunder since 2013, making it one of the earliest VR-capable titles, and was significantly improved with Update 2.7 "Red Skies" which moved the game to the OpenXR standard. However, the VR experience varies dramatically depending on which combat mode you are using — and this is the most important thing for schools to understand before deploying it.

3,000+ Historically Documented Vehicles — Free War Thunder's vehicle library is unmatched in the free-to-play space. Each aircraft, tank, and ship is researched from historical documents and surviving examples. This gives it extraordinary curriculum value for History — students can fly the Spitfire Mk.1 that defended Britain in 1940, the P-51 Mustang that escorted bombers over Germany, the Me 262 that was the world's first operational jet fighter, and the F-86 Sabre that fought in Korea, all in the same session. The 1930-1990s span covers the entire era of conventional military aviation studied at GCSE and A Level.
VR by Combat Mode: What to Expect
Air Battles
✅ VR: Excellent
VR cockpit view with hundreds of detailed historical aircraft interiors. Head tracking for dogfight situational awareness. Community consensus: air battles are "fantastic in VR." Best use case for schools.
🚈
Ground Battles
⚠ VR: Limited
VR works but the camera system is awkward for most tanks. "Tanks are absolutely [poor] in VR" per community. SPAA (anti-aircraft) vehicles work better. Community actively requesting camera improvements.
Naval Battles
❌ VR: Not enhanced
Ships are not meaningfully enhanced by VR. The fixed deck perspective adds no particular VR advantage. Reviewers consistently note naval VR adds little over flatscreen for this game mode.
Air Battles in VR: A Compelling History Lesson In air battle VR, you sit in the cockpit of a historically researched aircraft, looking around the real instrument arrangement as you fly. Pulling into a dogfight turn, scanning the sky for enemies, feeling the immersive scale of clouds and terrain — this is what War Thunder VR does exceptionally well. For History teachers covering WW2 air power, the ability to place students in the cockpit of a Spitfire, Hurricane, Bf 109, or Zero creates a physical understanding of these aircraft and their combat that no photograph or film clip can replicate. Importantly, this is free.

F2P Monetisation: Teacher Awareness Note War Thunder is free to play, but its economy includes premium accounts, premium vehicles, and battle pass mechanics. The game does not require any of these to access content, but they are present and visible in the interface. For classroom use, Gaijin Entertainment experienced a significant data breach in 2023 (game code and internal documents leaked). Teachers should be aware of these factors when deciding whether to use War Thunder in a school setting with student accounts.

Verdict
The most historically comprehensive military vehicle simulator available at no cost. Free entry, 3,000+ documented vehicles, and outstanding air battle VR make it a compelling History curriculum tool. Use it for air battles in VR — placing students in WW2 cockpits is genuinely educational and immersive. Do not rely on the tank or naval VR modes, which the community consistently identifies as poor. Teachers should be aware of the F2P monetisation model and the 2023 data breach when deciding on school deployment.
