About the Experience

What is Visit Azores?

Visit Azores is an indie VR travel experience that transports you to the island of São Miguel — the largest and most visited of the nine islands in the Azores archipelago, an autonomous Portuguese territory sitting in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The app is part of a growing "Visit" series by a solo developer that also includes Visit Madeira, Visit Faroe Islands, Visit North Spain, and Visit Alaska — a personal passion project to bring Atlantic and Iberian landscapes into VR.

The experience uses 360° 3D video — professionally filmed with a dedicated 360° stereoscopic camera — to place you inside each location with a genuine sense of presence. The developer has been explicit that nothing is AI-generated or 3D modelled: all footage is real, shot on location. Spatial audio accompanies each scene, capturing the natural soundscape of each environment — ocean waves at the coastline, birdsong in the volcanic valleys, the rush of waterfall mist.

Why the Azores for a geography classroom: The Azores are a geographically extraordinary archipelago — formed by volcanic activity on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, straddling the tectonic boundary between the Eurasian and North American plates. São Miguel alone contains two caldera lakes, active geothermal areas (with boiling mud pools at Caldeira Velha), hot springs, and a landscape shaped entirely by volcanic processes. As a case study for physical geography — volcanoes, plate tectonics, island formation, hydrothermal activity, biodiversity — it is close to ideal. And as a European destination that most UK students will never visit, VR access has genuine educational value.

The auto-move feature is a thoughtful inclusion: the developer designed it primarily for elderly users who may struggle with controller navigation, allowing the experience to automatically cycle through all locations without manual input. For classrooms, this makes it workable for students with limited VR experience — the headset can be placed on a student and the experience will progress automatically.

Locations

Featured Destinations on São Miguel

🌋
Sete Cidades Caldera
The crown jewel of São Miguel — a vast volcanic crater containing two lakes separated by a narrow bridge, one emerald green and one deep blue. The caldera is approximately 4km in diameter and sits in the western part of the island. Standing on its rim and looking down into the two-tone lakes below is one of the most visually striking experiences in all of Europe. This location alone justifies the purchase for any geography teacher covering volcanic landforms, crater lakes or tectonic processes.
💧
Salto do Cabrito Waterfall
A dramatic waterfall plunging into a lush green volcanic valley — the spatial audio captures the mist and the roar of the water with impressive realism. The lush subtropical vegetation surrounding the waterfall reflects the Azores' exceptionally mild and wet Atlantic climate — a useful geography discussion point about oceanic island climates and the Macaronesian ecological zone.
🏛️
Ponte dos Oito Arcos
The Bridge of Eight Arches — an impressive piece of traditional Portuguese stone engineering spanning a ravine in the island's interior. This location adds a human geography dimension to the experience, showing the island's built heritage alongside its natural landscape and linking to discussions about Atlantic Portugal's history and culture.
🏚️
Monte Palace Hotel (Abandoned)
A hauntingly beautiful abandoned hotel overlooking Lagoa das Sete Cidades — a ruin from the island's mid-20th century tourism boom, now consumed by vegetation with the caldera lake visible behind it. A striking image that works equally well for Geography (the rise and decline of tourism), History (20th-century Atlantic tourism) or English/Media (the aesthetics of urban decay).
The wider "Visit" series: The same developer has created similar experiences for Visit Madeira, Visit Faroe Islands, Visit North Spain and Visit Alaska. Schools interested in building a collection of Atlantic geography VR experiences could purchase several at low cost — each covering a different physical and human geography context. The Visit World free demo app samples locations from all five titles.

Visit Azores is most powerful for KS3 Geography — particularly units covering volcanoes, plate tectonics, island formation, coastal landscapes and climate. The Sete Cidades caldera is a textbook volcanic landform rendered accessible for every student regardless of whether their school could ever fund an Azores field trip. The multi-language audio guides bring cultural and historical context alongside the physical geography, making it genuinely suitable for a 45-minute lesson opener or supplementary experience. The auto-move feature and simple navigation make it highly accessible for students with limited VR experience, younger students, and SEND learners. As a wellbeing tool the peaceful Atlantic soundscapes and visually stunning environments are genuinely calming. The 360° video resolution is competent but not exceptional by 2025 standards — use the free Visit World demo to check quality expectations before purchasing.

Bottom line: A charming indie VR travel app that punches well above its price point. The Azores — one of Europe's most geographically extraordinary archipelagos — is an excellent curriculum destination, and the Sete Cidades caldera alone is worth the admission for any KS3 geography teacher. The multi-language audio guides add real educational value. Use the free Visit World demo first to check visual quality expectations. Excellent value for enrichment, geography and wellbeing use.
