Overview

Virtuoso is a virtual reality music creation sandbox developed by Really Interactive and published by Fast Travel Games, as the first release from that publisher's publishing arm. It launched on 10 March 2022 for Meta Quest, Rift and SteamVR headsets and costs $19.99. On the Meta store it is rated 4.3 from 345 ratings, a Very Positive score, and it is rated for everyone.

The app gives you six instruments designed for VR, including the Empads, a customisable drum kit, the Oorgan, a three dimensional keyboard style instrument, and a virtual microphone for vocals with reverb. A looper lets one person layer parts into a full track in real time, while tempo sync keeps everything on the beat and preset scales help players stay on pitch. An interactive tutorial introduces the instruments and tools, and finished tracks can be shared with the Virtuoso community. It can be played sitting, standing or at room scale.

Composition Without Barriers Many students enjoy music but cannot yet play an instrument well enough to compose. Virtuoso's scales and tempo sync remove the technical barrier, so students can focus on musical ideas: rhythm, layering, texture and structure. It is a hands on way into composition that feels like play.
What Students Can Do
🥁
Play instruments
Six VR instruments, from drums to a 3D keyboard and vocals.
🔁
Loop
Layer parts with the looper to build a full track.
🎼
Stay in key
Preset scales and tempo sync help beginners sound good.
🌐
Share
Publish finished tracks to the Virtuoso community.
Practical Notes The interactive tutorial gets new players started quickly. Instruments in Virtuoso are designed for VR rather than copying real ones, so skills will not transfer directly to a real instrument. Sharing to the community is optional; check your school's policy before students publish work online.

Strengths
  • Six VR instruments to explore
  • Looper makes layering easy to understand
  • Scales and tempo sync support beginners
  • Interactive tutorial
  • Very Positive rating on Meta Quest

  • Needs one headset per student creating
  • Less editing control than desktop software
  • Online sharing needs supervision
For Teachers: Layering and Structure Virtuoso suits KS3 music units on loops, layering and texture. Give students a brief, such as a drum loop, a bass line and a melody in a given scale, and ask them to explain the choices they made. Pair it with desktop software for refining and notating the ideas they create in VR.

Verdict
Virtuoso is a creative, well rated music sandbox that lets anyone build layered tracks without needing to play a real instrument. It is not a structured music course and the instruments are VR inventions, but as a hands on way to explore loops, layering and composition, it is recommended for music departments and clubs.
