Fireproof Games are a small independent studio based in Guildford, UK. They created The Room on iPad in 2012 and were immediately recognised with multiple international awards. The series has since become the gold standard of tactile puzzle design in mobile and now VR gaming. The Room VR: A Dark Matter, released in March 2020, is the fifth entry in the series and the first designed exclusively for VR — it has no flatscreen version.
The game opens at the British Institute of Archaeology in London in October 1908. An esteemed Egyptologist named Dr Rupert Montgomery has disappeared without explanation. Your investigation leads you through a series of cryptic locations, each containing elaborate puzzle mechanisms to manipulate, and into contact with an entity called The Craftsman and an otherworldly substance known as The Null. The atmosphere is Lovecraftian Victorian: beautiful, unnerving, genuinely mysterious.
The puzzle design is elegant throughout: each mechanism has a clear logic, the difficulty ramps naturally across locations, and the sense of physical interaction with elaborate clockwork objects is consistently satisfying. The game plays in 3-4 hours — shorter than the Myst series but very polished in every minute. The PSVR2 upgrade is free for PSVR owners.
