Overview

Awake Heart is a free educational VR experience from Awake Health that takes you inside a detailed, scientifically accurate 3D model of the human heart. Released in February 2022 on the Meta Quest platform, it covers the heart through three distinct lenses: anatomy, physiology, and electrical activity. Each lens is treated as a separate mode of exploration, allowing teachers to use the experience as a structured lesson component rather than a single undifferentiated walkthrough.

The experience is interactive rather than passive: you engage with the heart model in 3D space, and puzzles reinforce what you have observed. One user described it as "a pleasant surprise" that excelled both graphically and in its educational presentation, and noted it as "a great overview for Middle/High school or beginner college student overview of cardiac anatomy and function." The experience is available on all Meta Quest headsets (Quest 1, 2, Pro, 3, and 3S) as a standalone experience requiring no PC.

Companion App: Awake ECG Awake Health also publish a separate free companion app, Awake ECG, which focuses specifically on ECG measurements, natural cardiac pacemakers, and the electrical signals that drive cardiac contraction. Used together, the two apps provide comprehensive coverage of the cardiac curriculum from gross anatomy through to electrical physiology — making them particularly strong for A Level Biology and BTEC Health Science where ECG interpretation features in the specification.

The app supports English and Slovenian, suggesting the developer is based in Slovenia. The Meta Quest rating of 4.85 out of 5 from 14 ratings is very positive, though the pool is small. There are no public negative reviews. The experience has also been listed on the Microsoft Store for Windows Mixed Reality headsets.

Three Ways to Explore the Heart
🦢
Anatomy
Explore the structural organisation of the heart: its four chambers, the valves that prevent backflow, the major vessels entering and leaving, and the overall position within the thoracic cavity. The 3D model allows you to rotate, zoom, and examine structures from any angle in a way a textbook diagram cannot.
Right/Left Atrium Right/Left Ventricle Bicuspid & Tricuspid valves Semilunar valves Aorta Pulmonary vessels Vena cava
💓
Physiology
Observe the cardiac cycle in action: the sequence of atrial and ventricular systole and diastole, the pressure changes that drive blood through the chambers and into the pulmonary and systemic circuits. Seeing the cardiac cycle animated in 3D space reinforces the relationship between structure and function that is central to GCSE and A Level Biology specifications.

Electrical Activity
Follow the electrical conduction pathway that coordinates each heartbeat: the sinoatrial node acting as the natural pacemaker, the delay at the atrioventricular node, and the rapid spread of excitation through the bundle of His and Purkinje fibres. This is often the most challenging aspect of cardiac physiology for students, and the 3D visualisation of the conduction pathway is a significant aid to understanding.

The Awake ECG Companion App
⚡ Awake ECG — Free companion app
Awake Health publish a separate free companion app, Awake ECG, which extends the electrical activity content into a dedicated ECG experience. It focuses on ECG measurements and interpretation, natural cardiac pacemakers, and the electrical signals that drive the heart's contractions through the myocardium. For A Level Biology students covering the topic of the heart's electrical system, and for BTEC Health Science or nursing students who need to interpret ECG traces, Awake ECG provides a uniquely accessible introduction in VR. The two apps work as a natural pair: Awake Heart gives the anatomical and physiological foundation, Awake ECG develops the electrical and diagnostic content. Both are free on Meta Quest.

A Level Biology & Health Science Note The electrical activity content across both apps maps directly onto A Level Biology specifications (AQA, OCR, Edexcel) covering the cardiac muscle, the roles of the SA and AV nodes, and the interpretation of ECG traces. BTEC Health Science and nursing access courses also include ECG interpretation. Having a free VR app that demonstrates the conduction pathway with 3D visualisation is a genuine curriculum asset that is difficult to replicate with static diagrams.

Verdict
One of the strongest free biology apps available for standalone Meta Quest. The three-lens structure (anatomy, physiology, electrical activity) gives teachers genuine flexibility in how they use it, and the Awake ECG companion extends the value further into ECG territory that most similar apps ignore. GCSE and A Level Biology teachers covering the heart and cardiac cycle will find this directly relevant to their specifications. Free, works on all Meta Quest models, and unanimously praised in reviews. The thin evidence base and limited developer profile are the only caveats.
