About the Game

What is Galactic Catch?

Galactic Catch is the first full VR game from Baobab Studios โ€” a studio better known for its award-winning interactive VR films (Invasion!, Bonfire, Crow: The Legend, Baba Yaga). Founded on the belief that VR storytelling is its own art form, Baobab brought that same sense of warmth and cinematic craft to their first game โ€” and the result is a fishing experience quite unlike anything else in VR.

The premise is charmingly absurd: beloved alien friends Mac and Cheez have been swallowed whole by an enormous cosmic sea creature while on a fishing holiday in deep space. As their trusty robot companion, your only option is obvious โ€” become the greatest intergalactic angler in the galaxy and fish your way to a rescue. The campaign takes you across multiple alien worlds, each with its own distinct ecosystem of cosmic fish, fishing spots and story missions.

Baobab Studios' storytelling DNA is evident throughout: Galactic Catch isn't just a fishing game with a thin plot layered over it. The world has genuine lore โ€” each of the 60+ fish species has its own backstory, the alien planets feel like real places with distinct characters, and the narrative drive to rescue Mac and Cheez gives every fishing session a sense of purpose that purely zen fishing games lack. The game's Emmy-winning composer Rex Darnell wrote the soundtrack specifically for the game โ€” even the music feels crafted rather than functional.

The result sits in an interesting position in the VR fishing genre. It is not as relaxing and meditative as Real VR Fishing, and not as hardcore or realistic as Bait! โ€” it sits in between, marrying Baobab's narrative warmth with an accessible, arcade-flavoured fishing experience. As XR Source put it: it has "far more character than others in this genre." User reviews are similarly affectionate โ€” one player simply wrote "I literally cried after playing a few minutes of this game."

Features

What's in the Tackle Box

๐ŸŒŒ
4 Alien Worlds ยท 6 Fishing Spots
Each world has a completely distinct visual identity and ecosystem โ€” an iridescent alien ocean, a towering mushroom forest, a crystal cavern shimmering with bioluminescent light, and more. Six different fishing spots across these worlds each have their own species, ambience and challenge. The environments are rendered with the same attention to atmosphere that made Baobab's films memorable โ€” you genuinely want to spend time in these places, not just extract fish from them.
๐ŸŸ
60+ Cosmic Fish Species โ€” Including Rare & Legendary
The fish roster is one of the game's creative highlights โ€” over 60 species of entirely invented cosmic fish, each with its own appearance, behaviour and lore. Common fish are reliably catchable; rare and legendary species require the right lure, the right conditions and the right technique. Each catch adds to an in-game catalogue with its own backstory โ€” the fish feel like they belong to a real ecosystem rather than being generic placeholders. Five difficulty tiers mean there is always something to challenge improving anglers.
๐ŸŽฃ
Physical Fishing Mechanics โ€” Cast, Read, Reel
The fishing controls are physical and intuitive โ€” you cast by swishing the controller, then read the fish's behaviour through visual cues, and reel using a combination of timing-based actions (flick, pull, release) that vary depending on the fish's resistance. Timing is critical: pull too hard and the line snaps; too gentle and the fish escapes. The tension system creates satisfying challenge without frustration โ€” visual cues guide newer players clearly while still rewarding skilled reading of each fish's movement patterns. Appropriate for complete beginners from age 6 upwards.
โš—๏ธ
Crafting, Upgrades & Rod Powers
Resources gathered while fishing feed into a crafting and upgrade system โ€” rods and reels gain unique power-ups that change how they interact with fish, and lures and charms can be unlocked and equipped to improve catch rates for specific species. This gives the game a light progression system that rewards repeated play without becoming grind-heavy. For students interested in game design, the way the crafting system creates motivation to return to specific fishing spots for specific resources is a clean example of a well-designed progression loop.
๐Ÿ
Space Aquarium โ€” Display & Customise Your Collection
Prized catches can be displayed in a fully customisable space aquarium โ€” your base of operations between fishing expeditions. Decorative items unlock alongside fish, and the aquarium can be arranged however you like, making it a personal record of everything you have caught. For students, this acts as a tangible reward for effort โ€” your aquarium reflects your progress in a way that's immediately visible and satisfying. The aquarium is also the calm, relaxing centre of the experience โ€” a place to simply exist in the game world without active pressure.

Galactic Catch's primary school value is as a wellbeing and engagement tool โ€” and it excels at this more than almost any other VR title. The pace is gentle, the world is beautiful, the tone is warm and funny, and the physical act of casting and reeling is satisfying without being demanding. For students who find high-energy VR overwhelming, or who need a calming activity during a registration period, enrichment session or end-of-term slot, Galactic Catch is close to ideal. No content caveats, no motion sickness risk, no competitive pressure.

For Science, the game's ecosystem logic โ€” different species in different environments, the idea that lures mimic prey to attract fish, the concept of food chains implied by the difficulty tiers โ€” provides a light but genuine hook into marine biology and ecosystems thinking. For Computing, the crafting and progression system is a clear, accessible example of game design loops โ€” resource gathering feeding into upgrades feeding into better access to content. For Creative Writing or Art & Design, the extraordinary invented alien fish and world design provide rich stimulus for imaginative work. Recommended as a first VR experience for any age โ€” comfortable, beautiful, and completely non-threatening.

Bottom line: A genuinely charming and beautifully crafted VR fishing adventure that feels unlike anything else in the genre. Baobab Studios' storytelling craft is evident in every detail โ€” the worlds, the fish, the characters and the music. The short campaign and lack of post-launch content are real weaknesses, but at $12.99 it delivers exceptional atmosphere and is one of the safest, most accessible and most universally appealing titles in any school VR library.
