Overview

What Is It?

VLab Education is a free VR chemistry lab app for the Meta Quest, designed and built by a small team led by Adam โ€” a chemist and former high school chemistry teacher whose founding motivation is personal: he wants every student to have the hands-on lab experience that he had in high school and that, he observed, most students don't get.

The app positions itself as a genuine virtual chemistry laboratory rather than an educational game or simulation. Each experiment is designed by professional scientists to reflect authentic procedures, use real values for data collection, and teach proper lab technique โ€” including safety. Students don't just watch reactions happen; they use the same tools and instruments that working chemists use, and the reactions continue realistically whether the procedure is followed correctly or not.

One of VLab's most distinctive features is its commitment to open-ended experimentation: if a student makes a mistake, the simulation doesn't stop or reset โ€” it continues accurately with the consequences of that mistake. The scientific process, including failure, is part of the learning.

Origin

Why It Was Built

VLab's founder Adam chose chemistry over a tennis career. During high school he trained alongside players from inner-city Los Angeles schools and home-school programmes โ€” students who actively disliked science. He understood why: their schools didn't have the hands-on lab programme his own school offered. The abstract, textbook version of chemistry left them cold.

Adam later wrote a master's thesis on UV cross-linking technology for polymer coatings, then taught chemistry at a homeschool co-op campus and did demonstrations at a private school, specifically to understand the challenges teachers face when trying to engage students with practical chemistry. Students at those sessions were able to try VLab in its alpha development stage and gave positive feedback.

"My dream for VLab is to create a series of experiments that replicate real science โ€” but to go beyond them to give students an even deeper understanding." โ€” Adam, Founder, VLab Education
Experiments

The Lab Menu

VLab currently offers six complete experiments, with a seventh (Radiation Lab) in development. Each includes a supporting resource pack on the website โ€” SDS sheets, background reading, and pre/post-lab questions โ€” making it straightforward to embed within a formal lesson.

๐Ÿงซ
Glassware Showcase
A guided introduction to professional chemistry glassware, tools and instruments โ€” beakers, burettes, pipettes, flasks and more. Builds the practical vocabulary students need before any wet lab work. Particularly valuable for students who've never had a real lab session.
โš ๏ธ
Safety Lab
Students practise responding to genuine lab hazards: burns, broken glassware, chemical spills. PPE is required. This is an outstanding pre-lab preparation tool โ€” in a real school lab, these scenarios would be too dangerous to simulate deliberately. In VR they become safe teaching moments.
๐Ÿ”ฅ
Flame Test Lab
Identify different elements by the colour of their emission spectra using a Bunsen burner. A GCSE and A-level chemistry classic โ€” one of the most visually memorable experiments in school science โ€” reproduced faithfully in VR with correct ionisation colours.
๐Ÿ’ง
Hydrate Lab
Determine the number of water molecules in a given salt-hydrate sample through mass change on heating. Tests quantitative analysis skills and connects to the concept of water of crystallisation โ€” key GCSE and A-level content.
๐ŸŒก๏ธ
Heat Capacity Lab
Determine the heat capacity of different metals using a calorimeter and the mcฮ”T equation. Real numerical values, correct physical constants, and accurate calorimetric technique โ€” this is a proper quantitative experiment, not a demonstration.
โš—๏ธ
Precipitation Lab
Discover which solutions form a precipitate when mixed with silver nitrate. Tests understanding of solubility rules, ionic equations, and qualitative analysis โ€” GCSE and A-level chemistry content.
โ˜ข๏ธ
Radiation Lab Coming soon
Students will use a Geiger counter in a virtual nuclear lab to identify unknown radioactive isotopes by analysing real-time decay data. Preview content aligns with the radioactive decay content in Tablecraft.
Features

What Sets VLab Apart

๐Ÿ”ฌ Mistakes Proceed Realistically
Most simulations stop or reset when something goes wrong. VLab doesn't. Errors produce chemically accurate consequences โ€” reinforcing the scientific process and building genuine troubleshooting instincts.
๐Ÿ” Molecular-Level Visualisation
Zoom into chemical reactions to watch atoms bond, molecules form, and structures change at scales impossible to observe in a physical lab โ€” connecting abstract theory to observable phenomena in a way textbook diagrams cannot.
๐Ÿฆบ Lab Safety Simulation
The Safety Lab teaches hazard response through direct experience โ€” chemical spills, burns, PPE requirements โ€” in scenarios that would be impossible to recreate safely in a real classroom. A pre-lab safety session has never been this engaging.
๐Ÿ“Š VR Tablet + Account Sync
An in-VR lab tablet lets students record observations and data during experiments. Results sync to a VLab Education account, viewable outside the headset โ€” enabling teachers to review student work and students to continue analysis after the session.
๐Ÿ“š Supporting Resource Pack
Each experiment on v-lab-education.com is accompanied by Safety Data Sheets, background theory, pre-lab and post-lab questions, and experiment summaries โ€” the full lesson wrapper a teacher needs to make a VR session into a proper lesson.
๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ No Dangerous Chemicals
Experiments like the Flame Test Lab and Heat Capacity Lab involve Bunsen burners, calorimeters and real reagents that carry risk in a physical lab. In VR, students can practise the technique, handle the glassware, and complete the analysis without any safety concern.

What to Be Aware Of

โš ๏ธ
Small indie project. VLab Education is a small team โ€” the app has a modest online footprint compared to Tablecraft or Nano and very few public reviews at the time of writing. It is not backed by NSF funding or a major studio. What it does have is genuine chemistry expertise and a clear educational mission.
โš ๏ธ
NGSS aligned, not UK curriculum-specific. The Next Generation Science Standards are a US framework. The chemistry content maps well onto GCSE and A-level topics, but UK teachers will need to cross-reference which experiments fit their scheme of work rather than following explicit UK alignment.
โš ๏ธ
Account required for data sync. The full data-recording workflow requires creating a VLab Education account. The in-VR experience is accessible without one, but the teacher-facing data review functionality needs registration.
โœ…
Free โ€” and genuinely designed by chemists. The experiments were created by professional scientists, not educators guessing at chemistry. The mcฮ”T equation in the Heat Capacity Lab, the correct ionisation colours in the Flame Test, the authentic precipitation procedure โ€” these are accurate.
โœ…
The Safety Lab is a genuinely unique selling point. No other VR chemistry app reviewed here offers a dedicated lab safety training module. The ability to simulate chemical spills, burns and PPE scenarios safely is something physical school labs cannot do โ€” and it has obvious value as a pre-lab preparation tool.
โœ…
The developer actively wants feedback. VLab has a Discord community and an Ambassador programme. For a free product still growing its audience, user input directly shapes what gets built next โ€” the Radiation Lab is already in development.
Our Verdict

XR School Scores

Educational Value 8 / 10
Designed by professional chemists, NGSS-aligned, open-ended realistic reactions, and molecular visualisation. The Safety Lab in particular is uniquely valuable. Held slightly below the top tier by modest community traction and limited public validation data.
Experiment Quality & Authenticity 9 / 10
Real procedures, correct data values, genuine instruments, and chemically accurate consequences for mistakes. This is a serious attempt to replicate real laboratory work in VR โ€” not a simplified simulation.
Ease of Use 7 / 10
The open-ended structure means less hand-holding than a guided app โ€” which is a feature for independent learning but may need teacher framing in a busy classroom. Account setup for data sync adds a small step.
Classroom Fit 8 / 10
Supporting resource packs (SDS, pre/post-lab questions, lesson plans) on the website make integration into a formal lesson straightforward. Works on all Quest headsets. Data sync to teacher account is a genuine advantage for assessment.
Value for Money 10 / 10
Completely free. Six complete experiments with full supporting resources. The only cost is the time to set up accounts and install it on headsets.
Bottom Line

VLab Education is one of the most seriously chemistry-focused VR apps available for the Quest platform. Built by a professional chemist with a clear educational mission, it offers six authentic experiments โ€” including the only dedicated lab safety simulation in this review series โ€” with real procedures, real data values, and chemically accurate outcomes whether students follow the protocol correctly or not. It is free, works on all Quest headsets, and comes with a full resource pack for each experiment. It is a smaller project with less community traction than Tablecraft or Nano, and UK teachers will need to do their own GCSE/A-level mapping โ€” but for any chemistry teacher looking for a genuine virtual lab, it deserves a serious look.
