Quest 2 Updates End in 2027: What It Means for Schools

Meta has announced that the Quest 2 and Quest Pro will get their last software update in early 2027. Lots of schools and families still use a Quest 2, so here is what is changing, what keeps working and whether you need to do anything.

What Meta announced

In a post for developers at the start of November, Meta set out an end of feature plan for both headsets. The key dates are:

  • January 2027: the final system update, Horizon OS 2.13 (v213), starts rolling out.
  • March 2027: v213 reaches every Quest 2 and Quest Pro. There will be no new features after this. Anything Meta adds later will be for Quest 3, Quest 3S and newer headsets only.
  • Through 2027: quarterly security patches and critical bug fixes continue until the end of the year.
  • December 2027: Meta stops accepting brand new apps that support the Quest 2 or Quest Pro.

What keeps working

Your headsets will not suddenly stop working. Apps you already own stay fully functional, and you can still browse, buy and download apps from the store. Developers can keep updating their existing apps for the Quest 2, and online play with Quest 3 and 3S owners carries on where a game supports it. The original Quest went down the same path: its system updates stopped in 2023, but security updates continued until August 2024.

What this means for schools

For the next year, a class set of Quest 2 headsets will carry on much as it does today. The change will be gradual. More new educational apps will launch for Quest 3 and 3S only, and once security updates stop at the end of 2027, older headsets become harder to justify on a school network. If your school manages its headsets through Meta Horizon Managed Services or a tool such as ManageXR, ask your provider how they will handle Quest 2 devices after 2027. Our guide to Meta’s management changes for schools explains how things work at the moment.

Our take

There is no need to throw out Quest 2 headsets that work. Keep using them for the apps you rely on, and plan to replace them during 2027, ideally before the security updates end. For new purchases, the Quest 3S is the sensible choice, and a second hand Quest 2 is now a poor long term buy. The same goes for parents: if a Quest 2 is on a Christmas list, look at the Quest 3S instead.
