About the Platform

What is Prisms Math?

Prisms Math is a VR maths education platform for Grades 7–11 — the most extensively developed, best-evidenced and most ambitiously designed maths VR platform available on Meta Quest. It was founded in 2020 by Anurupa Ganguly, an MIT engineer who left a career leading curriculum for some of America's largest school districts to build an entirely new approach to secondary mathematics education through virtual reality.

The platform is built on a specific pedagogical insight: that students fail to develop genuine mathematical understanding not because they can't do the algebra, but because they have never had a reason to. Prisms embeds every mathematical concept inside a real-world problem that students experience spatially and kinesthetically in VR before abstracting to symbolic notation. Students don't study linear regression — they become urban planners working out when a city's waste production will overwhelm its management systems, physically plotting data points in 3D space by walking the x-y axis, and rotating their body to find the line of best fit.

The pedagogical sequence: Every Prisms module follows the same arc: (1) students are immersed in a real-world scenario in VR — a physical, sensory, emotional context; (2) they manipulate mathematical objects kinesthetically in 3D space; (3) they abstract upwards to 2D representations, data, graphs and equations; (4) they apply the concept to solve the mission. This mirrors how the brain builds durable understanding — from concrete physical experience to abstract symbolic representation, not the other way around.

Prisms has raised $17 million across two funding rounds led by Andreessen Horowitz, received grants from the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health and Gates Foundation, and has been independently validated by WestEd in a randomised controlled trial. It is in use in 100+ US school districts across 26 states, with 80,000+ students using the platform.

Curriculum

What Topics Does It Cover?

Prisms targets "bottleneck concepts" — the specific topics where students most commonly hit a wall, understanding breaks down and falls behind persists. These are not review topics; they are the core conceptual moments that define whether students can progress in secondary mathematics. The current library spans four maths levels plus high school chemistry and biology:

Grades 7–8 Maths
Fractions · Ratios · Probability · Rate of Change · Surface Area · Angles · Volume · Pythagorean Theorem · Transformations · Inequalities · Functions · Properties of Exponents · Rational Operations · Balancing Equations · Rigid Transformations
Algebra 1
Linear Functions · Quadratics · Exponential Functions · Statistics · Factoring Quadratics · Systems of Linear Inequalities · Absolute Value Functions · Roots & Rational Exponents
Geometry
Trigonometry · Distance Formula · Circle Equations · Transformations · Congruence & Similarity · Solids of Rotation
Advanced Algebra
Logarithms · Complex Numbers · Periodic Functions · Conic Sections · Vectors · Matrices · Polar Coordinates
Also available: High School Chemistry (Periodic Trends, Electron Configuration, Bonds, Chemical Reactions, Acids/Bases, Thermochemistry) and Biology (Cellular Energy, Biomolecules, Cells, Mitosis, DNA, Genetics, Evolution, Ecology).
Coming future releases: Middle School Science · Kinesthetic Skill Building Modules · Physics · Environmental Science · Grades 4–6 Maths · AP Statistics · AP Calculus AB/BC · AP Biology/Chemistry/Physics · Multivariable Calculus · Linear Algebra · Humanities.
Example Module

Linear Regression — Urban Planning Mission

This is how Prisms teaches linear regression — one of the Algebra 1 modules. The same pedagogical arc applies to every topic in the library.

1
Real-world immersion
Students sort their camping trip waste to discover that many items meant for recycling end up in landfill. They then visit a landfill in VR to experience its physical and environmental impact on a community first-hand.
2
Kinesthetic spatial manipulation
Students become urban planners. They physically embody the x-y coordinate space — walking the axes and plotting data points about a city's growing population and waste output to generate a scatter plot with their own body.
3
Abstraction
Students rotate their body to minimise the distance between a trend line and the data points — physically discovering the line of best fit and the concept of residuals through movement, before it is formalised symbolically.
4
Mission completion
Students use the equation of the line of best fit they derived to answer the urban planning question: when will the city's waste overwhelm its existing management capacity? They solve a real problem using their own understanding.
Evidence

What Does the Research Show?

Prisms is backed by more rigorous educational evidence than any other VR maths platform available for schools.

WestEd Randomised Controlled Trial — 36 Ohio Schools
WestEd conducted an independent RCT across 36 schools in Ohio examining whether Prisms improved student learning of exponential functions compared to traditional teaching. Students in the Prisms treatment group outperformed the business-as-usual control group on the researcher-developed measure of exponential functions.

Gates Foundation — 10-Year Retention Study (Ongoing)
Prisms is working with the Gates Foundation and WestEd on a 10-year study in Arizona examining whether the platform increases student retention at universities — tracking whether the understanding built at secondary level sustains through higher education.

Prisms is built around the US Grade 7–11 curriculum (roughly KS3, GCSE and A-Level in England), and the topics map well. All of the Grades 7–8 maths content is directly relevant to KS3, and the Algebra 1 and Geometry modules map tightly to GCSE content including functions, equations, transformations, trigonometry and statistics. The Advanced Algebra library extends into A-Level territory. Note: the platform is US-developed and uses US notation and real-world contexts — the vast majority translate cleanly, but teachers should review modules before deployment for any notation differences. The $24/year consumer subscription is excellent value for individual use or homework complement; the school pricing ($12–$14/student/year) requires contact with Prisms directly.

Bottom line: The best VR maths education platform on any headset. Built by an MIT-trained educator, backed by Andreessen Horowitz and the Gates Foundation, validated by a WestEd RCT, deployed in 100+ US districts. The pedagogical approach — real-world embodied experience before symbolic abstraction — is grounded in the best available learning science. For any secondary maths teacher with Quest headsets, this should be the first platform they investigate.
