Overview

Primal Roar: Jurassic Dinosaur Era is a single player VR game by the Polish studio Vipera Games, released on Steam on 1 December 2022 for $24.99. It runs on PC VR through OpenXR with tracked controllers. The interface is available in English and 31 other languages, with full audio in English. It has only six user reviews on Steam, not enough for an overall score.

The game has three modes. The encyclopedia mode lets you watch meat eating and plant eating dinosaurs up close, explore their surroundings and learn about each one's diet, time period and size. In hunt mode you play as one of six carnivores, such as T. rex or Spinosaurus, and complete missions to track and eat prey. The roller coaster mode offers seven rides through the jungle.

Meeting Dinosaurs at Scale Children love dinosaurs, and seeing one at life size is a very different experience from a picture in a book. The encyclopedia mode is the part of Primal Roar with real educational value, letting students compare size, diet and period while the animals move around them.

Choose the Mode Carefully The hunt mode involves chasing and eating prey, and Steam users tag the game as violent, so it is not suitable for lessons with younger students. The roller coaster rides can cause motion sickness. For school use, stick to the encyclopedia mode and preview it first.

For Teachers: Use the Encyclopedia Only In KS2 science on fossils and evolution, use the encyclopedia mode to compare dinosaurs by size and diet, and ask students to record facts in a table. Avoid the hunt mode in class. Pair the experience with real fossil evidence to discuss how scientists know what dinosaurs looked like.

Verdict
Primal Roar mixes a genuinely useful dinosaur encyclopedia with a violent hunting mode and roller coasters. Only the encyclopedia suits school, it needs PC VR and it has few reviews, so at $24.99 it is a niche choice for primary dinosaur topics.
