Overview

What Is It?

Out of Scale is the debut VR experience from Kurzgesagt โ€” In a Nutshell, the Munich-based science communication studio behind one of YouTube's most-watched science channels (25 million+ subscribers). Developed in partnership with Schell Games โ€” the acclaimed studio behind I Expect You To Die and Among Us VR โ€” and published directly by Meta, it brings Kurzgesagt's unmistakable flat-design visual language into an interactive VR adventure.

A lab experiment has gone badly wrong. Giant ants, an oversized tardigrade, a rogue protist, and colossal fungi have escaped into the city. Armed with the Shrink-o-gen โ€” a device that lets you resize yourself and objects in the environment โ€” you must travel through five worlds of scale (molecular, bacterial, insect, human, and mountain) to put things right. Your guide throughout is STEVE, the lab's AI assistant, voiced by the instantly recognisable narrator from Kurzgesagt's YouTube videos.

The science isn't window dressing. Each scale level operates under genuinely different rules of biology and physics, and solving the puzzles requires understanding why those rules change โ€” why an ant can carry 50 times its own weight, why bacteria behave differently at their scale, what makes a tardigrade nearly indestructible. The concept of scale itself is the lesson, and VR is uniquely suited to teach it.

Who Made It & Why It Matters

๐ŸŽฌ
Kurzgesagt โ€“ In a Nutshell
One of the world's most trusted science communicators โ€” 25M+ YouTube subscribers, known for making complex science visually clear and emotionally compelling. Every educator already uses their videos. Now those videos are playable.
๐ŸŽฎ
Schell Games
Award-winning VR studio behind I Expect You To Die (1.5M+ sales) and Among Us VR. Among the most experienced VR game developers in the world. Their involvement guarantees the interaction design meets consumer game standards.

Five Worlds, Four Missions

The game's four story missions span five distinct scale realms, each governed by genuinely different scientific rules that you must understand to progress. Each realm uses Kurzgesagt's signature visual style โ€” bold flat colours, rounded creatures, and clean design โ€” making abstract scale concepts immediately vivid.

โš›๏ธ
Molecular World
The smallest scale. At this level, atoms and molecules behave under quantum rules โ€” randomness, bonding, and the laws of chemistry operate entirely differently from the human-scale world.
๐Ÿฆ
Bacterial World โ€” Mission: The Protist
At bacterial scale, surface tension dominates, Brownian motion is tangible, and organisms navigate by chemical signals. The protist mission brings single-celled life into direct focus.
๐Ÿœ
Insect World โ€” Mission: The Giant Ants
Why can ants carry 50ร— their body weight? Why would a giant ant collapse under its own mass? The square-cube law โ€” one of science's most important cross-subject concepts โ€” is the key to this mission.
๐Ÿป
Human World โ€” Mission: The Tardigrade
Our familiar scale โ€” but even here, an oversized tardigrade is causing chaos. Tardigrades are among biology's most remarkable organisms: essentially indestructible at their native microscopic scale, but how do their survival mechanisms function when enlarged?
๐Ÿ”๏ธ
Mountain World โ€” Mission: The Fungi
At geological scale, gravity and mass dominate everything. The fungi mission explores what happens when living organisms grow to sizes that defy the biological rules that normally govern them.
Features

Beyond the Main Game

๐ŸŽญ Multiplayer Theater
Invite friends into a shared VR space to watch Kurzgesagt's 2D science explainer videos together โ€” surrounded by 3D models from the game. A genuinely novel way to use Kurzgesagt's existing catalogue as collaborative classroom viewing.
๐ŸŒ Mixed Reality Sandbox
Unlock creatures and objects in the game and bring them into your real home via passthrough MR. A giant ant crawling across your actual floor makes scale viscerally real โ€” and connects the in-game science to the physical world.
๐ŸŽ™๏ธ The Kurzgesagt Voice
STEVE is voiced by Kurzgesagt's instantly recognisable narrator. For students already familiar with the channel โ€” and many are โ€” this creates an immediate sense of trust and familiarity that significantly lowers the activation energy for engagement.
๐Ÿ” Hidden Ducks & Collectibles
Hidden rubber ducks and unlockable objects reward thorough exploration โ€” a game design mechanic that encourages students to look carefully at each environment rather than rushing through. Small but effective.

What to Be Aware Of

Critics loved it (Metacritic 92). Users are mostly positive (4.1โ˜…). But there's a meaningful gap between the two groups โ€” and it's worth understanding why.

โš ๏ธ
Some players get stuck. Independent reviewers and user feedback report that certain puzzle steps are unclear โ€” particularly around the order in which objects must be scanned. The developers have published an official walkthrough, which suggests this is a known issue. It is not a dealbreaker but is worth noting for classroom use: students may need teacher support or the walkthrough to hand if they get stuck.
โš ๏ธ
Requires internet connection. Unlike Nano, this app requires an active internet connection to run โ€” a consideration for schools with restrictive network policies or poor Wi-Fi in the classroom space.
โš ๏ธ
No built-in curriculum. Unlike the Dissection Lab or Nano, there are no teacher guides or curriculum materials included. Out of Scale is a consumer game, not a school product โ€” teachers need to build their own lesson context around it.
โœ…
Kurzgesagt familiarity is a genuine asset. For students who already watch the channel โ€” and huge numbers do โ€” stepping into that visual world feels like entering a familiar place. That prior affinity dramatically lowers cognitive barriers and raises intrinsic motivation.
โœ…
The square-cube law in a game. The concept that surface area scales as the square but volume as the cube โ€” and what this means for biology and physics โ€” is one of the most cross-subject powerful ideas in science education. Experiencing it through gameplay is significantly more memorable than a textbook explanation.
Our Verdict

XR School Scores

Educational Value 9 / 10
The concept of scale is genuinely cross-curricular (biology, physics, chemistry, maths) and VR is uniquely suited to convey it. Real science in every puzzle mechanic. Metacritic 92 from critics tells its own story.
Immersion & Visual Quality 10 / 10
Kurzgesagt's visual design is stunning in VR. Entering a molecular world that looks exactly like the YouTube animations โ€” but in full 3D, at scale โ€” is a genuinely extraordinary experience. Nothing else looks like this.
Ease of Use 7 / 10
Generally comfortable and accessible, but some puzzle sequences are ambiguous enough that the developers published an official walkthrough. Have it available for classroom sessions to avoid frustration.
Classroom Fit 7 / 10
Works on all Quest headsets including Quest 2. Internet required is a mild constraint. No curriculum materials โ€” teachers build their own context. Best used as a 1โ€“2 lesson experience with discussion framing around it.
Value for Money 10 / 10
$14.99 for a game with Schell Games production quality, Kurzgesagt visuals, four missions, a multiplayer theater, and a mixed reality sandbox. Exceptional value by any measure.
Bottom Line

Out of Scale is one of the most visually spectacular and conceptually distinctive educational VR experiences available. The Kurzgesagt visual world in VR is genuinely breath-taking, the science of scale is real and cross-curricular, and Schell Games' involvement guarantees the game mechanics are polished. Tempered slightly by the absence of built-in curriculum materials and a few puzzle sequences that can stump players โ€” have the official walkthrough ready. At $14.99 for a game of this ambition and quality, it is outstanding value and deserves a place on every science department's headsets.
