Overview

Jigsaw Puzzle VR is a solo indie project by developer Silas Marrs, available on the Meta Quest official store and on Steam. Its defining feature is procedural puzzle generation from any image: unlike every other VR jigsaw in this batch, which offers a fixed library of bundled puzzles, Jigsaw Puzzle VR takes any PNG or JPG image and generates a playable jigsaw from it on the fly.

On Meta Quest, custom images are added via web URL — point the app at any image hosted on the web and it generates a puzzle from it. On Steam, images are added by dropping files into a folder. The game ships with 30 bundled puzzles. Gravity can be toggled off so pieces float freely in mid-air, which eliminates the classic puzzle-table spatial constraint entirely. Pieces never get lost. The intended atmosphere is explicitly low-stress: "perfect for playing while listening to podcasts or audiobooks."

The Curriculum Superpower: Any Image Becomes a Puzzle No other VR jigsaw in this section allows teachers to generate puzzles from their own curriculum images. History teachers can import primary source photographs. Geography teachers can import satellite imagery or landmark photographs. Art teachers can import paintings from museum collections. Science teachers can import microscopy slides or anatomy diagrams. The image becomes a jigsaw; students assemble it while interacting closely with every part of the picture. This is a genuinely different pedagogical tool from a fixed-library jigsaw app, and is the primary reason the score sits above simple relaxation puzzles despite the indie-scale production.
Platform Availability and Notes
📱
Meta Quest (Standalone)
On the official Meta Quest store. Custom images added via PNG/JPG web URL directly in the app. 30 bundled puzzles. Active subreddit for bug reports and feature requests.
🎵
Steam (PCVR)
Available on Steam. Custom images added by placing files in the Pictures/JigsawPuzzleVR folder. Steam page notes: "Requires Oculus Rift with touch controllers. Not currently tested with other VR systems." Verify compatibility with your headset before purchase.
Steam Platform Compatibility Warning The Steam page explicitly states the game was designed for and tested with Oculus Rift Touch controllers, and has not been tested with other VR systems. If your school uses SteamVR with a non-Oculus headset (HTC Vive, Valve Index, Windows Mixed Reality), functionality cannot be guaranteed. The Meta Quest standalone version does not carry this caveat and is the recommended purchase route for Quest headset owners.

Verdict
The procedural generation mechanic is Jigsaw Puzzle VR's entire reason to exist over competitors — and it is a genuinely compelling one. Any teacher who can identify a curriculum image can turn it into a VR jigsaw. History primary sources, geography landscapes, art masterpieces, science diagrams: all become puzzles. On Meta Quest the URL import makes this feasible in a classroom setting without file transfers. The solo indie production level is honest and modest, and the Steam platform note is a real caveat. But the core concept is the most educationally versatile in this jigsaw batch. Quest users should try it; Steam users should verify headset compatibility first.
