Overview

Hadrian's Villa Reborn: Stadium Garden is a virtual tour by Flyover Zone, a company that turns academic reconstructions of ancient sites into virtual tours. It was released on Steam on 7 November 2020 and on the Meta PC VR store in January 2021, where it costs $9.99. It is no longer sold on Steam, and Flyover Zone now offers the tour through its Yorescape app, which streams on the web and runs on phones and tablets.

The tour recreates the so called Stadium Garden at Hadrian's Villa in Tivoli as it appeared in the 130s CE, late in Hadrian's reign. Despite the name, it was not a sports ground but a setting for imperial audiences, dining and leisure. Stops include the South Nymphaeum with its statues of the Niobe story, the South Hall where Hadrian receives an audience, the North Hall sculpture gallery, and the North Peristyle with the emperor's dining room. Audio is narrated in English by Prof. Bernard Frischer, Director of the Digital Hadrian's Villa Project, with subtitles in English, French, Italian and Spanish. The complex can also be seen lit at night.

Archaeology Brought Back to Life Most of Hadrian's Villa survives only as ruins. This tour puts the buildings, gardens and sculptures back where scholars believe they stood, with the person who led the research explaining each space. It shows students how archaeologists use evidence to reconstruct the past, not just what the past looked like.
Tour Highlights
🗿
South Nymphaeum
Sixteen statues telling the story of Niobe.
👑
South Hall
Hadrian presiding over an imperial audience.
🏛️
North Hall
The villa's sculpture gallery.

Which Version to Use The PC VR version needs a VR capable PC. For most schools, the Yorescape version is easier, because it runs in a browser or on tablets without a headset. The developer notes that some statues are nude, as is typical of Roman sculpture, so preview the tour with your class in mind. A related tour of the villa's South Theater is also part of the Flyover Zone collection.

Strengths and Limitations
Strengths
  • Based on scholarly research
  • Narrated by the project's director
  • Statues shown in their original settings
  • Subtitles in four languages
  • Also available without a headset through Yorescape
  • Night view of the complex
Considerations
  • Short, focused on one part of the villa
  • No longer on Steam
  • PC VR version needs a capable PC
  • Some nude statues
  • Few user ratings
For Teachers: Classics and Roman History Use the tour in Classical Civilisation, Latin or KS3 history lessons on the Roman Empire and Hadrian. Ask students how the reconstruction was made and what evidence it relies on. It pairs well with work on Hadrian's Wall, showing two very different sides of the same emperor.

Verdict
Hadrian's Villa Reborn: Stadium Garden is a short but scholarly reconstruction, guided by the archaeologist who led the research. It is narrow in scope and harder to find in VR now that it has left Steam, but through Yorescape it is easy to use in class. For Classics and Roman history, it is recommended.
