Birdseed
Birdseed
A gentle VR game in which you wander a small forest with a camera and binoculars, photographing chubby, characterful birds and logging what you see. Now free on Steam as well as Quest, with co-op for up to four. Charming and calm, but light on depth and keen to sell you cosmetics.
Based on published information, not hands-on play
Birdseed comes from Buffalo Buffalo, a small studio in Vancouver. It started in Early Access on Meta Quest in autumn 2025, reached its full 1.0 release on Quest at the end of April 2026, and on 8 October 2026 launched free on SteamVR, with cross-play so friends on Quest and PC can share the same forest.
The idea is simple. You stand or sit in a small, cosy forest with a camera, lenses and binoculars, wait for birds to appear and try to take the best photo you can. Each picture earns a star rating, and your shots are printed and stored in a journal. A Life List and field guides reward you for spotting different birds and recording behaviours such as pecking, perching and sleeping, while daily and weekly challenges give you goals to work towards. Since 1.0 you can also play online with up to three friends using room codes.
The developer says the birds are modelled on real bird movement, flight and calls, but they are clearly stylised: the Steam page itself promises the chunkiest, cutest birds in VR. So think of it as a game about the habits of a birdwatcher rather than a bird identification guide.
The game is free, but it has a shop. Cosmetic items such as camera skins, charms and photo frames are sold with Rainbow Bottlecaps, which on Quest range from $4.99 to $74.99 a bundle, and there are paid Founder’s Packs. Buffalo Buffalo says these items are optional and do not affect play.
This review is based on the store listings, the developer’s patch notes, player ratings and published coverage, not on hands-on play. UploadVR was positive about the Early Access version, and Quest players currently rate it 3.5 out of 5.

The birds are stylised and we could not confirm which real species appear, so do not rely on Birdseed for bird identification.
