Overview
League of Tabletop Games VR is a collection of four classic board and card games brought into VR by an independent Chinese developer. It is available on Meta Quest and SteamVR, with a free sideload version available through SideQuest. The game's distinctive character is its focus on East Asian gaming culture: while Chess and Ludo are internationally familiar, Landlord (Dou Di Zhu) and Chinese Chess (Xiangqi) are the primary subjects and the most developed features.
Cultural Interest: Games from East Asian Tradition
Three of the four games in this collection either originate from or are primarily popular in China. Xiangqi (Chinese Chess) is one of the world's oldest and most complex strategy games, with different pieces and movement rules from Western chess and a distinctive board divided by a river. Dou Di Zhu (Landlord) is one of the most popular card games in China, played in countless variations across the country. For MFL Mandarin teachers, cultural studies, or schools with significant Chinese-heritage student populations, this collection offers an uncommon VR gateway to culturally grounded games that other VR board game apps don't include.
The Four Games
♞
Chess
Western chess with multiple themed environments. AI opponents across difficulty levels. The most internationally familiar game in the collection.
✈
Ludo (Aeroplane Chess)
The Chinese variant of Ludo with aircraft-themed pieces on a camping-themed VR board. Race your pieces home across the colourful grid.
🃏
Landlord / Dou Di Zhu
Popular Chinese card game. One player is the "landlord" trying to empty their hand; two "peasants" cooperate to defeat them. Online multiplayer + avatar customisation.
♔
Chinese Chess / Xiangqi
One of the world's great strategy games. Red vs Black on a river-divided board with unique pieces: Generals, Cannons, Chariots, Horses. MR support included — project the board onto your real table.

Strengths and Limitations
Strengths
- Xiangqi (Chinese Chess) in VR is genuinely unusual — rarely available elsewhere
- Dou Di Zhu multiplayer — culturally authentic Chinese card game
- MR support for Xiangqi (Quest headsets)
- Free SideQuest version reduces financial barrier
- Distinctive cultural angle for MFL/Mandarin curriculum
- Multiple themed VR environments for each game
Considerations
- Limited external reviews — niche app with small user base
- Dou Di Zhu and Xiangqi unfamiliar to most Western students
- Production quality modest compared to All On Board
- MR only for Xiangqi, not the full game collection

Verdict
A niche but genuinely interesting collection that distinguishes itself through its East Asian game selection. For Mandarin language or cultural studies programmes, the inclusion of Xiangqi and Dou Di Zhu offers something no other VR board game platform provides. The free SideQuest version removes the financial barrier entirely. Production quality is modest compared to All On Board, and most Western students will be unfamiliar with Dou Di Zhu and Xiangqi — which could be framed as an educational opportunity rather than a limitation. Best recommended as a supplementary option for culturally specific contexts.
