Overview

RaceRoom Racing Experience (R3E) is developed by KW Studios, the team formerly known as Sector3 Studios and, before that, SimBin — the studio behind Race 07 and Race Pro. First released in Steam Early Access in February 2013, RaceRoom has been free-to-play throughout its life, focused on competitive online touring car and GT racing built on official licensing from real-world motorsport series.

The simulation was developed with input from professional racers, including DTM driver Bruno Spengler, and from partners including the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) organisation itself. The result is a library of over 100 fully licensed cars from manufacturers including BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Ford, McLaren, Pagani, RUF, and Volvo, racing on laser-scanned circuits including a Nordschleife that is reviewed and updated annually to reflect real-world track changes.

"Looks Fantastic in VR" — Consistent Community Praise VR quality is one of RaceRoom's most consistently praised attributes across community reviews. One player wrote: "Sim racing in VR is an amazing experience if you've never tried it, but a lot of titles can be really difficult to keep them from looking fuzzy and giving some people motion sickness. RaceRoom looks fantastic in VR!!!" Another, after 600+ hours in Project Cars 2, returned to RaceRoom and praised the force feedback, AI competitiveness, and realistic car behaviour, calling it "really Fun (with VR) to drive across the different Racetracks and enjoy the racing atmosphere."

The Premium Pack Trade-off RaceRoom's free tier gives access to a meaningful selection of cars and tracks, enough for a genuine first VR racing experience at zero cost. Full access to the 200+ car, 50+ track library requires either grinding in-game virtual currency — described by some reviewers as "an excruciating grind" — or purchasing the Platinum Pack, which one reviewer noted is "more pricey than a single standard game, but still extremely more affordable than iRacing." Periodic Free Access weekends (announced via the official forums) unlock everything temporarily — worth watching for and timing school sessions around if possible.
What the Community Says
Community review (VR focus)"Best racing sim on the market"
"Personally, I feel that this is the best racing sim on the market. VR and FFB are excellent. I highly enjoy it!!"
Community review (comparison)Sound design standout
"After the December update, all sims are very close to each other in terms of realism — iRacing, AC, ACC, rF2, RaceRoom, AMS. I think it's only a choice of tracks, cars, and for sim racers, the FFB. My favourite becomes R3E because of the most realistic sound and some great cars of the past."
OverTake.gg (2024)Still worth playing
"You have every WTCR series from 2022 all the way back into WTCC in 2013. You also have GT Masters if you want to race various GT3 cars, or GT1 cars from the late 2000s. There are prototypes like the Audi R18, and a bunch of open wheelers."

Verdict
A genuinely free entry point into officially licensed touring car racing, with VR quality that the community consistently rates among the best in the genre. The DTM, WTCC/WTCR, and ADAC GT Masters licensing gives RaceRoom a distinctive German motorsport identity that connects naturally to Languages and Geography curriculum. The honest constraint is the free-to-play unlock model: the free tier is a real and usable starting point, but full library access requires grinding or paying for the Platinum Pack. For a zero-cost VR racing taster with excellent VR fidelity, RaceRoom delivers; for unrestricted variety from day one, budget for the Platinum Pack or time sessions around Free Access events.
