Overview

Assetto Corsa Competizione is developed by Kunos Simulazioni, the Italian studio behind the original Assetto Corsa, and published by 505 Games. It holds official licensing as the video game of the GT World Challenge (formerly Blancpain GT Series), the premier international GT3 racing championship organised by SRO. This means the cars, teams, drivers, and circuits in ACC are not generic recreations but licensed reproductions of the actual GT World Challenge grid — an authenticity that no competitor in this category matches.

Built on Unreal Engine 4, ACC was praised at launch for its photorealistic graphics, dynamic weather, and incredibly detailed car models. 92% of 14,005 Steam reviews are positive, and Steambase scores it 93/100. OpenCritic rated it "Strong" with a 75 critic average. The game accurately recreates the full structure of GT3 racing: sprint races, endurance challenges, and the legendary Spa 24 Hours — one of the most demanding endurance events in motorsport.

VR: "Astonishing" GT3 Cockpit Immersion ACC's VR implementation via SteamVR is widely regarded as one of the finest cockpit experiences in sim racing. A dedicated VR review described it: "ACC VR pretty much lets you sit inside the cockpit of a GT3 car and lets you feel and see what it's like to be on the race track as if you were actually in a GT3 car. It's an astonishing practice and there are times when it feels so good that you just want to keep doing it." For Physics curriculum demonstrations of cornering forces, braking, and weight transfer, the combination of GT3-accurate physics and immersive VR cockpit presence is exceptional.

The game does require a reasonably capable PC for VR — performance settings need attention to maintain smooth frame rates. ACC's career mode and online multiplayer received some criticism at launch for lacking polish ("career mode and multiplayer aren't perfect and lack some interesting features"), though Kunos has continued supporting the title with updates.

ACC vs Assetto Corsa EVO (2024) Kunos released Assetto Corsa EVO in 2024 as a successor focused on a broader range of road and track cars rather than GT3 specifically. EVO is currently in Early Access with Mixed reviews across most languages. ACC remains the mature, polished, fully-released product and the stronger choice for schools today. EVO is worth monitoring as it develops but is not yet a substitute for ACC's GT3-focused depth and stability.
PEGI 3 / Everyone — But Genuinely Difficult ACC is rated PEGI 3 and ESRB Everyone, meaning no content restrictions for any age group. However, "difficult" is one of its own Steam tags, and the realistic GT3 physics mean the learning curve is steep. New users will benefit from in-game driving aids (traction control, ABS, racing line) which can be adjusted to ease the transition. For sixth form Physics or Engineering students with genuine interest in motorsport, the depth rewards sustained engagement.
What Critics and Players Say
Official description / criticsOpenCritic 75 "Strong"
"Assetto Corsa Competizione has an exceptional DNA: more than a driving game, it's a top-level simulator, developed with the support of the GT World Challenge organisers and built to recreate the real championship experience."
Metacritic user (highly positive)10/10
"One of the best PC simulators... this is obligatory for all GT3 fans or PC racers. Without having to pay for iRacing or rFactor, Assetto Corsa Competizione is as real as it gets when getting behind the wheel."
Metacritic user (balanced)Positive with caveats
"Great simulation model with night driving and accurate weather conditions. Career mode and multiplayer aren't perfect and lack some interesting features, but in a few months we'll probably have a perfect title."

Verdict
The definitive GT3 simulator, carrying official licensing from the GT World Challenge and major manufacturers that gives it an authenticity no competitor matches. 92% Steam positive, Steambase 93/100, and VR described as "astonishing." The steep learning curve and GT3-only focus mean it's best paired with driving aids for newcomers and is most rewarding for students with genuine motorsport interest. For Physics demonstrations of real-world cornering forces and braking dynamics in an officially licensed, visually stunning VR cockpit, ACC is exceptional.
