The Thrill of the Fight – VR Boxing

Here are the key facts about The Thrill of the Fight – VR Boxing:

What it is A room-scale only VR boxing game focused on authenticity, where players jab, dodge, and physically move around a virtual ring to fight their way to the top.

Developer Originally developed solo by Ian Fitz under Sealost Interactive. Fitz quit his job to make the game with zero budget and was “barely getting by” financially while developing it. Interestingly, he had never watched a boxing match in his life before making it.

Development Approach Rather than starting with boxing knowledge, Fitz took a physics-based approach and researched the biomechanics of boxing. Because of this strong foundation in real physics, realistic boxing behaviours emerged naturally in the game — sometimes without him even intending them.

Gameplay Mechanics All striking and blocking is entirely physics-based. Opponents can throw straights, hooks, and uppercuts to both the head and body. Players physically move around their real-world space — joystick movement is not supported at all. A minimum play area of 2m x 2m (6.5ft x 6.5ft) is required.

Training Modes Beyond main fights, the game includes virtual boxing equipment for training: a heavy bag, a speed bag, a B.O.B. (Body Opponent Bag), and a focus ball.

Progression Players fight a series of opponents of progressively increasing difficulty. After defeating an opponent, a custom match against that opponent is unlocked, with adjustable parameters such as punching speed, blocking tendency, and dodge speed.

Platform Compatibility Available on PCVR (Steam) and natively on Meta Quest. The PC version does not support Quest via Oculus Link — the native Quest version must be used.

Release Date Originally released on Steam on 1 July 2016.

Reception Holds an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating on Steam, with 95% positive reviews across nearly 4,000 ratings — one of the most acclaimed VR titles available.

Sequel A sequel, The Thrill of the Fight 2, has been released, developed and published by Halfbrick Studios. It adds online multiplayer, a career mode, customisable avatars, and ranked matchmaking — and has even been used as a live spectator esport event.
