Overview

Aenaon is an independent Greek VR project set in the ancient Greek world. On Steam it has been in Early Access since 26 July 2020, priced at $13.99, and it has no user reviews yet. A Quest version, titled Aenaon VR: The Return of Ancient Greece, is sold as a demo on itch.io from $5.99 as an Android APK, and is described as in development.

The planned story follows a young traveller from home in ancient Marseilles, the Greek colony of Massalia, through Poseidonia to Olympia, with the goal of winning the kotinos, the olive wreath awarded at the Olympic Games. Along the way players meet gods, demigods, philosophers and ordinary people and take part in puzzles, games and lessons about history. Planned sports include running, javelin, wrestling, horse racing and archery, and there is a version of the ancient puzzle game Ostomachion. The available demo covers only the route as far as Poseidonia.

The Olympics as They Were Aenaon's idea is a good one: show the ancient Olympic Games as part of a wider world of religion, philosophy and travel, not just a sports event. The kotinos, a simple olive wreath, also makes a striking contrast with today's gold medals.
Planned Journey
⛵

🧩
Ostomachion

An Unfinished Project Aenaon is clearly incomplete: the demo stops at Poseidonia, and there is little recent public information about progress. The Quest version must be sideloaded, which many schools restrict. Treat it as an interesting work in progress rather than a ready classroom resource.

Verdict
Aenaon has an appealing idea, the ancient Olympics in the wider context of Greek life, but it remains an unfinished Early Access project with little to judge it by. Keep an eye on it, but for now it is not ready for regular classroom use.
