Overview

History Experience: Rome is a VR tour of everyday life in the ancient city, made by Spanish indie studio BlackBird Studios. It launched on Meta Quest on 15 May 2026 and arrived on Steam for PC VR on 26 October 2026. On Quest it runs on Quest 2, 3, 3S and Pro, is rated Everyone, is rated Comfortable, can be played sitting or standing and does not need an internet connection.

The developer describes faithfully recreated spaces that range from a Roman domus (a family townhouse) to a castrum (a military camp). Places such as a temple and a tabernae, the small shops that lined Roman streets, are covered by the narrated tour. It is a calm, look and listen experience rather than a game: there are no puzzles or challenges mentioned in either store listing.

This review is based on the Meta and Steam store listings and published screenshots, not on hands-on play. The Quest version has seven ratings averaging 4.4 stars and the Steam version only two reviews so far, so we will revisit our score as more players try it.

The Key Idea Stand inside the topic. Pupils studying the Romans usually meet a domus or a legionary camp as a floor plan or an artist’s drawing. Here they can walk through the rooms at life size and hear what each space was for. That sense of scale and layout is hard to get from a textbook, and it is exactly what VR does well.
How It Works
🎧
1. Tour Mode
Follow a set route while audio guides explain the history, social role and daily life of each place.
🚶
2. Free Mode
Explore with no fixed route, stop wherever you like and look closely at the architecture.
🏛
3. The Places
Spaces named by the developer include a domus, a castrum, a temple and a tabernae.
🖥
4. Try Before You Buy
A free demo is available on Steam, so PC VR users can check it suits their class first.
For Parents: Gentle and Low Risk With an Everyone rating, a Comfortable comfort rating, seated play and no combat, this is a very gentle VR experience. It is cheap and a small 1.1 GB download on Quest. Meta’s account rules still apply to younger children and short sessions are best: our guide Is VR bad for children? has practical advice.

The developer states on Steam that, as a small team, it uses AI generated English voiceover for the narration. Spanish is also available with full audio, which could interest language teachers too.

For Teachers: A Virtual Field Trip for Your Romans Topic The KS2 history curriculum includes the Roman Empire and its impact on Britain. This app is set in Rome itself rather than Roman Britain, but the domus and the military camp give useful context for lessons on how Romans lived and how the army was organised. Use Tour Mode as a short field trip, then ask pupils to sketch a floor plan or label a Roman house from memory. Free Mode works well for pupils who finish early. As there are no built in questions, prepare a simple spotting sheet. For more ancient Rome in VR, see our review of Rome Reborn: Roman Forum.

Verdict
History Experience: Rome is a modest but useful virtual field trip. It lets pupils walk through a Roman house and an army camp with a narrated guide, it costs very little, runs on almost any Quest and needs no internet. It is light on interaction, the English voice is AI generated and very few people have reviewed it yet, so our score is cautious. For a KS2 Romans topic it is an easy, low cost way to bring the period to life.
