Aerofly FS 2
Flight Simulator

A beautifully visual flight simulator praised from launch for its outstanding VR performance and accessible approach. Fly 16+ detailed aircraft over photorealistic south-western USA scenery. Best known as one of the smoothest VR flight experiences available — and the most beginner-friendly in the category.

Developer: IPACS (Swiss / German)
Price: $49.99
Released: November 2017 (out of Early Access)
Successor: Aerofly FS 4 (2022)
⚠ Legacy product note: Aerofly FS 4 (2022) is the current IPACS simulator. Aerofly FS 2 was the current IPACS simulator when released in 2017 and is still fully functional, but it has been superseded by Aerofly FS 4, which offers significantly expanded global coverage, more aircraft, and modern features. Schools purchasing a new IPACS simulator may wish to evaluate Aerofly FS 4 rather than FS 2. FS 2 is reviewed here for completeness as it appears on The XR School.

Overview

Aerofly FS 2 was developed by IPACS (International Professional Aviation Consultants and Simulation), a Swiss company with German roots whose earlier Aerofly RC simulator series was respected in the RC community. Released out of Steam Early Access in November 2017, it was notable at launch for two things above all others: the quality of its VR implementation, and the beauty of its photorealistic south-western USA scenery.

The VR experience in Aerofly FS 2 was, at launch, widely regarded as the smoothest and most accessible in PC flight simulation. IPACS prioritised rendering performance from the ground up, making it possible to fly in VR without the GPU headaches that plagued X-Plane 11 VR at the time. Community members praised the "addictive immersive quality" of the VR flight experience, with at least one report of a sim pilot purchasing a motion platform specifically because of how good FS 2 felt in VR.

Why Aerofly FS 2 Still Matters: VR Performance and Accessibility Aerofly FS 2's core advantage over its competitors has always been its combination of visual quality and VR performance. While X-Plane required careful tuning and DCS demanded a significant learning investment, Aerofly FS 2 could be running in VR within minutes of installation, with beautiful California scenery, a working A320 cockpit, and smooth frame rates. For teachers wanting to demonstrate VR flight simulation to students with minimal setup and no prior knowledge of flight simulation, FS 2 remains the most beginner-accessible of the serious simulators.

Consider Aerofly FS 4 Instead Aerofly FS 4, released in 2022, is the current IPACS simulator. It adds worldwide high-resolution satellite imagery (not just south-western USA), more aircraft, improved systems, and Vulkan rendering. For schools purchasing new, evaluating Aerofly FS 4 rather than FS 2 is recommended. FS 2 is reviewed here because it appears in The XR School's flying category, but it is no longer the current product in its own series.
Strengths
  • Outstanding VR performance — smooth from day one
  • Beautiful photorealistic south-western USA scenery
  • Most accessible serious flight simulator for beginners
  • 16+ aircraft spanning WW1 to modern airliners
  • Flight school tutorials included
  • Windows / macOS / Linux / iOS support
Considerations
  • Superseded by Aerofly FS 4 (2022)
  • Base scenery limited to south-western USA only
  • No ATC, no multiplayer in base
  • Limited aircraft systems depth vs X-Plane / DCS

Verdict
A beautiful, accessible flight simulator with one of the best VR performance track records in the category. For schools wanting a smooth, beginner-friendly VR flight experience with a wide aircraft selection and gorgeous California scenery, FS 2 delivers. The honest caveat: it is now a legacy product superseded by Aerofly FS 4 (2022), which adds global coverage and modern features. For new purchases, evaluate FS 4. For schools that already have FS 2 or find it discounted, it remains a solid classroom tool.
