Overview

What Is It?

Biology Dissection Lab is a purpose-built VR learning app from Xennial Digital, developed in close collaboration with experienced biology teachers and subject matter experts. It gives students a fully guided, immersive dissection experience across five classic specimens β€” without a single physical animal, scalpel injury, or bottle of formalin.

The core design philosophy is preparation and unlimited practice. Real school dissections typically give students one opportunity per specimen β€” VR removes that constraint entirely. Students can repeat a dissection as many times as they need, make mistakes without consequence, and arrive at a physical lab session with genuine prior experience of the procedure and the anatomy.

It's available in two versions: a standard single-device licence purchased directly from the Meta Quest Store, and a Pro campus version requiring an annual licence through Xennial directly, designed for whole-school deployment via MDM platforms like ArborXR and ManageXR.

Content

The Five Specimens

Each specimen comes with an anatomy gallery for pre-dissection study, followed by a fully guided dissection using virtual scalpel, scissors and forceps. Both external and internal anatomy are covered in detail.

πŸͺ±
Worm
Annelid anatomy; segmentation, circular & longitudinal muscle, simple body plan
🐚
Clam
Mollusc body plan; mantle, gills, foot, siphons and bivalve shell structure
🦞
Crayfish
Crustacean arthropod; exoskeleton, gills, appendages, internal organ systems
🐟
Fish
Vertebrate anatomy; gills, swim bladder, lateral line, digestive & reproductive systems
🐸
Frog
Classic school dissection; heart, lungs, digestive tract, liver β€” detailed vertebrate anatomy
Features

What Makes It Stand Out

πŸ–
Full Hand-Tracking
Dissect with your actual hands β€” no controllers required. Students pick up and use virtual scissors, forceps and a scalpel with natural hand movements. This significantly reduces cognitive load and makes the experience feel intuitive from the first use.
πŸ“–
Anatomy Gallery Pre-Study
Before touching a specimen, students explore an interactive anatomy gallery β€” reviewing external features, labelled structures and key terminology. This ensures they're not going in blind and models good pre-lab preparation practice.
♾️
Unlimited Repetition
In a real lab, a student gets one frog. In VR, they get as many as they need. Students can practise incision technique, revisit structures they missed, and build genuine confidence before β€” or instead of β€” a physical dissection.
🌍
English & Spanish
Available in English and eight regional Spanish variants (Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Puerto Rico, Venezuela). A significant practical advantage for bilingual schools and EAL students.
🏫
Designed for Schools
Co-developed with practising biology teachers β€” not a consumer app retasked for education. The guided structure, clear learning objectives and curriculum-aligned specimens reflect real classroom needs. Works offline, with no internet required during sessions.

How to Use It

There are three distinct ways Biology Dissection Lab fits into a school biology programme:

1
Pre-lab preparation β€” students practise the dissection in VR before handling a physical specimen. They arrive knowing the procedure, the anatomy, and the tools. Fewer errors, less wasted time, better outcomes.
2
Ethical alternative β€” for students who object to physical dissection on ethical or religious grounds, or schools that have phased out physical specimens entirely, this is a full curriculum-equivalent replacement.
3
Independent revision β€” students can revisit dissections at home or during free periods, reinforcing anatomical knowledge ahead of assessments without any physical materials required.
🏫 Whole-school deployment. The Pro version supports campus-wide rollout via MDM platforms including ArborXR and ManageXR. For PICO headset fleets or large-volume orders, contact Xennial directly at xennial@xennialdigital.com.

"Our aim with the VR Dissection Lab is to offer a tool for biology students to practise their dissections unlimited times before they have to actually dissect the physical animals β€” as they only get one shot at each dissection."

Our Verdict

XR School Scores

Educational Value 9 / 10
Curriculum-aligned, teacher-designed, anatomy-accurate. One of the strongest purely educational VR apps on the Quest platform.
Immersion & Realism 8 / 10
Hand-tracked tools feel genuinely surgical. Anatomical detail is strong; visual fidelity is solid rather than photorealistic, but entirely functional for education.
Ease of Use 9 / 10
Step-by-step guided structure means students can work independently without teacher supervision for each dissection. Hand-tracking removes controller complexity.
Classroom Fit 9 / 10
Pro campus licence, MDM support, offline capability. Built for school deployment from the ground up. Works sitting, standing or room-scale.
Value for Money 8 / 10
$65.99 is not trivial, but five fully guided dissections with unlimited repeats compares very favourably to the cost and logistics of physical specimens. Campus Pro pricing on request.
Bottom Line

Biology Dissection Lab is among the most practically useful VR education apps available for secondary science. It was built by and for biology teachers, covers the five specimens that appear most commonly in school programmes, and addresses a real logistical problem β€” the irreversibility of physical dissection β€” in a way that genuinely improves learning outcomes. At $65.99 for unlimited use on a single device, it represents solid value, and the Pro campus licence makes whole-school rollout straightforward. Highly recommended for any secondary biology department with Quest headsets.
