VLab Education
VLab Education
A free VR chemistry laboratory where students become the scientist โ conducting real-world experiments designed by professional chemists, learning proper lab technique and safety, and seeing reactions unfold at the molecular level.
What Is It?
VLab Education is a free VR chemistry lab app for the Meta Quest, designed and built by a small team led by Adam โ a chemist and former high school chemistry teacher whose founding motivation is personal: he wants every student to have the hands-on lab experience that he had in high school and that, he observed, most students don't get.
The app positions itself as a genuine virtual chemistry laboratory rather than an educational game or simulation. Each experiment is designed by professional scientists to reflect authentic procedures, use real values for data collection, and teach proper lab technique โ including safety. Students don't just watch reactions happen; they use the same tools and instruments that working chemists use, and the reactions continue realistically whether the procedure is followed correctly or not.
One of VLab's most distinctive features is its commitment to open-ended experimentation: if a student makes a mistake, the simulation doesn't stop or reset โ it continues accurately with the consequences of that mistake. The scientific process, including failure, is part of the learning.
Why It Was Built
VLab's founder Adam chose chemistry over a tennis career. During high school he trained alongside players from inner-city Los Angeles schools and home-school programmes โ students who actively disliked science. He understood why: their schools didn't have the hands-on lab programme his own school offered. The abstract, textbook version of chemistry left them cold.
Adam later wrote a master's thesis on UV cross-linking technology for polymer coatings, then taught chemistry at a homeschool co-op campus and did demonstrations at a private school, specifically to understand the challenges teachers face when trying to engage students with practical chemistry. Students at those sessions were able to try VLab in its alpha development stage and gave positive feedback.
The Lab Menu
VLab currently offers six complete experiments, with a seventh (Radiation Lab) in development. Each includes a supporting resource pack on the website โ SDS sheets, background reading, and pre/post-lab questions โ making it straightforward to embed within a formal lesson.
What Sets VLab Apart
What to Be Aware Of
XR School Scores
VLab Education is one of the most seriously chemistry-focused VR apps available for the Quest platform. Built by a professional chemist with a clear educational mission, it offers six authentic experiments โ including the only dedicated lab safety simulation in this review series โ with real procedures, real data values, and chemically accurate outcomes whether students follow the protocol correctly or not. It is free, works on all Quest headsets, and comes with a full resource pack for each experiment. It is a smaller project with less community traction than Tablecraft or Nano, and UK teachers will need to do their own GCSE/A-level mapping โ but for any chemistry teacher looking for a genuine virtual lab, it deserves a serious look.
VLab is the only app in this review series to offer a dedicated lab safety training module โ simulating burns, spills and broken glassware safely in VR. An invaluable pre-lab preparation tool that physical labs simply cannot replicate.
