Overview

theBlu is a VR ocean experience series from Wevr, directed by Jake Rowell and originally released in 2016 as one of the defining early works of room-scale VR. More than a decade later, it remains one of the most frequently cited "gateway" experiences in VR — the encounter that first showed people what the medium could genuinely do that nothing else could.

The base experience, Whale Encounter, is free: you stand on the deck of a sunken ship and watch an 80-foot blue whale drift slowly past, turning its eye toward you. The scale is genuinely overwhelming. Additional episodes explore a coral reef in full migration and the bioluminescent deep ocean, each available as inexpensive DLC. The whole season totals roughly 20 minutes of content.

Scientific Collaboration theBlu was developed in collaboration with Dr. Sylvia Earle, the legendary oceanographer and National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence, and with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego. This scientific partnership gives the experience genuine marine biology credibility beyond its visual impressiveness. The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County has used theBlu in its permanent galleries.

Directed by Jake Rowell, whose background spans Call of Duty and Final Fantasy, the series applies cinematic craft to an experiential medium. Each episode is built around a single, carefully choreographed encounter rather than open exploration, which makes the emotional impact sharp and reliable. The whale encounter in particular has been used by educators globally as a demonstration of VR's power to generate empathy and awe.

Steam Reviewer Steam Community
"When I put the ocean on my head at a library event and let me sit in the heart of a dead sperm whale and watch a giant squid swim by, I was hooked. When I'm having a bad day, I can just dive into the ocean and hang out with a blue whale. I can't believe how awesome that is."
Neville Spiteri, CEO, Wevr Wevr
"There is something very moving about having a close encounter with a wild creature. And in VR you get that same sense of connection and empathy. In VR you are the protagonist — it is about you and your experience with a variety of species in the ocean."

Verdict
A landmark. The Whale Encounter has introduced more people to what VR can actually do than almost any other experience, and a decade on, it still delivers. The scientific credibility from Scripps and Dr. Sylvia Earle gives it genuine marine biology depth beyond the spectacle. At five minutes per episode and free for the base experience, the barrier to use is minimal. The PC VR requirement is the main limitation for most schools. If you have the headset, this is among the first experiences you should show anyone.
