Overview

The Holy City is a virtual reality project about Jerusalem made by the Canadian studio Blimey. It exists in two versions on Meta Quest. The Holy City: 360 Documentary was released on 18 January 2022 for $9.99 and invites viewers to immerse themselves in the city through 360 degree film; it is rated 2.5 from just 6 ratings. The Holy City: Exploration of Faith followed on 21 June 2023, published as Holy City VR, and uses volumetric captures with six degrees of freedom, so you can move around within the scenes.

Exploration of Faith was produced by an interfaith team of filmmakers. It visits the Western Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Al Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock, and captures rituals including the Holy Fire ceremony, Ramadan and Sukkot. At the time of writing its store listing shows an unusually high price, so check the Meta store before planning to buy it. Both versions are rated for everyone.

One City, Three Faiths Jerusalem is sacred to Jews, Christians and Muslims, and its holy sites sit within a few hundred metres of each other. Seeing them side by side in VR, with real worshippers and ceremonies, helps students understand both what each faith holds sacred and why the city matters so deeply to so many people.

Verdict
The Holy City offers a rare chance to visit the sacred sites of three faiths in Jerusalem and to witness their rituals. Ratings are few and mixed, the two versions are confusing, and the topic needs careful handling. For religious studies teachers, it is worth a look once you have previewed it and checked the price.
