Overview

VR Plant Journey is an educational virtual reality game developed by Breakpoint One and Simmation together with plant researchers from the Leibniz Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research (IPK) in Gatersleben, Germany, which is also a co publisher. It was released on Steam in June 2021 for $4.99, and Breakpoint One also sells a standalone Meta Quest version on itch.io from $2.99.

The game takes you inside a canola plant, known in the UK as oilseed rape, from root to flower. It is split into three chapters, root, leaf and seed, and uses playful mini games to show how plant cells work and what the plant needs to thrive. You help it grow from a seedling to a flowering plant. It is available in English and German and is aimed at a general, family audience.

Inside a Real Crop Most plant biology resources use a generic flower. VR Plant Journey follows a real crop plant and was built with researchers who study it, which gives teachers a route into food security, agriculture and why plant science matters, as well as the core biology of roots, leaves and seeds.
The Three Chapters
🌱
Root
How roots take up water and nutrients from the soil.
🍃
Leaf
How leaves use sunlight to make food for the plant.
🌾
Seed
How the plant flowers and produces seeds.
🎮
Mini games
Playful challenges that help the plant grow at each stage.
Which Version to Buy The Steam version runs on a PC VR setup and is listed as room scale or standing. The itch.io version is an Android APK for Meta Quest, which must be sideloaded onto the headset using developer mode, something many school IT policies restrict. Sessions are short, so plan it as part of a lesson rather than the whole lesson.

For Teachers: Plant Biology and Food Security Use VR Plant Journey in KS2 and KS3 units on plant parts and their functions, and on photosynthesis and transport in plants. After playing, ask students to draw and label the journey they took. For older students, link canola to oil production and food security to show why plant research matters.

Verdict
VR Plant Journey is a charming, research backed look inside a real crop plant, with short chapters on roots, leaves and seeds. It is inexpensive and fits primary and lower secondary plant biology well. Sessions are short and the Quest version needs sideloading, but as a lesson starter on how plants work it is recommended.
